Sold it - Bought another! Sigma 30mm F1.4

Exactly what it says. I've just recieved my Sigma 30mm F1.4 - again!
I sold it as I hardly used it.
Once it was gone I really missed having it for the few times I did use it - and kicked myself for sellin git every time!
So I have just bought another of condyk (Thanks :) )

(And I've got a 70-200 F2.8 L IS on the way :D )

Had a bit of a lens reshufffle to better suit my shooting style!

noah - buy one! One hint, some copies do front focus so either buy a used sharp copy (I did this time) or buy from somewhere with a good returns policy (as i did last time). My first one was a front-er but the replacement I sold to Searyous was spot on.

Didn't actually cost much as I bought used this time - part of the exttra cash from my 120-300mm trade

I don't want to sway anyone but the Canon 35mm f/1.4L is amazingly good. I've never compared it to the Sigma but I have no desire to. it hardly ever comes off my 20D, I love it to bits.

It's double the price of the Sigma equivalent on Onestop-digital, but I got mine in New York and paid even less than that. Also, L glass will hold its value better than third party lenses, so you need to factor that into the equation as you'll make a larger percentage of the money back when you sell it. I can sell my 35L at a price very close to what I paid for it, provided that I keep the optical surfaces perfect.

There are lenses that are good for the money and there are lenses that are good, full stop.

30 f1.4 is on my list of things to buy. Just need other things before getting it though :) Used to not think twice about buying stuff (as kerso knows) but now I have a rather large mortgage I've tried to calm down :)

Ah, but if you look at some proper, scientific bench tests, you'll see that the corner sharpness of the 35L is already better at f/1.4 than the Sigma is at f/4. Corner sharpness is always where the quality shows through.

in all honesty that sigma looks just fine to me. i understand that the canon is slightly better at the corners and that the extra performance costs a lot to make but hey am i really going to notice?

luckily for me the choice is made, i use nikon so the sigma it is. :)

interesting to here about different copies, i shall look second hand and get samples of shots first.

Well we've all heard of the rule of thirds and we all tend to make an effort to place our foreground objects at interesting points in the frame, rather than just lumping them dead-centre.

So with that in mind, I do think corner sharpness is very important. Perhaps even more so than centre sharpness, if I'm honest.
