After taking some advice on this thread (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=201819) I ordered a Benro tripod and ball head and a Manfrotto 410 head.

The Manfrotto head arrived today and I was playing around before the tripod came. I think it's faulty but I want to check because the instructions are not that clear.

The head has three controls for "pan", "tilt" and "levelling". The tilt and levelling seem fine, you can make fast adjustments by twisting the outer knob or fine adjustments by turning the inner knob either way.

I think the "pan" is faulty, the outer knob for fast controls is fine as is clockwise on the inner knob for fine control. Anti clockwise on the inner knob however causes the knob to unscrew. I assume this is not right and it should be a fine adjustment for panning the other way?

Thanks for your help.

Pete,

I have just checked my 410 and it pans slowly in both directions, it certainly sounds as though you have a faulty one. I would imagine the best things as it is new is to return for a replacement ..... I am assuming you bought it from UK.

I suspect the rubber covering comes off on the fine adjust knob to reveal some form of set screw, messing with it is almost certain to void the warranty.

I hope your tripod arrives soon, I am sure you will be pleased with it. I just checked on my 397 and that arrived at East Midlands airport tonight at 20:10.

If I can check anything else PM me or reply on here...

Pete,

Have you tried locking the pan control when you mount the head on the tripod and making sure it's screwed home tight before you release the pan lock?

Hi CT,

I don't have the tripod yet so I'm just playing with the head on its own. I don't think the head has a pan lock as such so I'm not sure what you mean.

Thanks for your help though.

Pete, would the head not need to be locked solid to a tripod in order to use the panning correctly?

Thanks for your help Paul. I'll contact Warehouse Express tomorrow and see what they say.

Hi Johnny, the head is locked solid onto a spare column (http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-manfrotto-445ccs-carbon-fibre-short-column/p11054?utm_source=aw&awc=2298_1265752584_00c0ac1259a1c0d78ae424b8056f96 ad) which I also bought.

I am pretty sure it's faulty, turn the know one way, it makes fine adjustments to the pan, turn it the other way and it unscrews.
