Non-SLR/DSLR for a newbie?

Hi everyone, I've just arrived here and am hoping someone can help me choose a camera:)
I'm not looking for an SLR or DSLR quite yet, just a good digital camera that is easy to carry around etc, but as I've always just bought cameras based on their price I thought maybe some of you would have better suggestions.
I've currently got a Kodak Easyshare DX6440 (yes I am THAT basic!).
Can anyone suggest a digital camera of roughly the same size and around the £250 mark? Or less would be better!;)
I could be persuaded to go DSLR but it would have to be around the same price and include everything I would need, so I'm sure that's out of my reach.

Sorry if this is a bit of a basic question!

A good camera for that money would be a Fuji, you have a choice of s5600, s5500 & possibly a s9600 (sure thats the current models)

These cameras are a great stepping stone before going DSLR.

They are fully automatic or allow you to go manual and learn all the different settings of digital photography before you take the plunge and get a DSLR.

I had a s7000, before i bought my first DSLR, its a great way to learn

Look out for a canon powershot Pro1 second hand (they're discontinued now). They are the only non-SLR cameras to feature an 'L' designated lens!!

Failing that the Canon Powershot S3 IS - a little above your budget, but kerso may be able to quote a decent price or again, second hand market.

These are 'bridge' cameras that offer a conventional LCD screen as well as an electronic viewfinder.

I would also recommend a Powershot Pro1 as a good camera. I had one for a few years before stepping up to the SLR world and as Jonnyreb points out it has an "L" lens on it which is a cracker. You get lots of keepers with it and it's quite forgiving.

If you do want to go SLR and have a budget of £250 then you might be able to pick up something on E-Bay for around that price such as the previous generation Nikons or Canons.

As many threads on here say, go to Jessops have a play around with a load of them and see what feels right for your needs.
