WA and 100% crop

really 2 questions
I've been reading reviews - till i'm sick of them..:thumbsdown:.. to find the best WA for me...

1...reviewers say "forget the xxxx as it's only manual focus on the Nikon D40"
I'm buying it for landscapes on a tripod ......manual focus at infinity ok then ...??...massive depth of field.....:shrug:

2...whats a 100% crop?
picture was of dog
100% crop showed tail details....but where do the number 100% come from?

erm manual focus is fine at any distance as long as you can do it. I manually focus on my film bodies the whole time :D

erm, its a zoom so one pixel on the camera matches one pixel on the screen

for example a 100% crop of a portrait image for TP will be a box in the middle of the picture 800 px high by 533px long

the proportion that is to the original image is to do with the resolution of the original image (megapixel count)

so if my camera is set at jpeg fine and image size is 3000x2000

then 100% crop gives a box IN that image of 30x20 ? or 300x200?

should be discussing this over a beer instead of at 2bloodyAM !...:lol:

the 2 am is fine, beer is better

100% crops can be any size, but its a size you crop down to instead of resizing

so if you crop an eye down, so you have the pixels around it and it to be the same size as whatever size you view at instead of resizing so the image is that size.

I know how to do this in PS but have never actually bothered as I need the crop to show people stuff and its almost never worth it :D

If you use Photoshop, Zoom into 100% and make a crop. Your crop can be any size.
When you zoom to 100% in Photoshop (or any other software you may want to use) the image is likely to be far bigger than your monitor can handle but when you make the crop you select a smaller are of the image to show.

so its not the crop that's 100% of something

its the image zoomed 100% and then I select within that image and crop to that selection

edit...ah..like this ?...understand now - it shows the quality if the image/lens....:)

no, you need to do an example, then it falls into place - did for me....:thinking:

ok - open a picture in yer editor -i use free ones ATM till I can justify buying PhotoShop Elements 6

so open in Gimp or Paint.NET [which i use] - at the top you'll see................ - Window +
either click on + till the image gets to 100% or select 100% in the "Window" icon box

the image will get BIG and the PC monitor will only see a portion of it

select the crop tool - select the area you want - click the crop button -save as.. whatever

sorry if I've dumbed it down, but at 2am today I didn't get it

dont know why it's used - I saw it in Lens Review Sites and didn't understand

don't worry about it, they are for pixel peepers to show other pixel peepers how sharp there shots are, tbh whats the point :D

look at 100% in lightroom or PS to see whether you missed focus ect :D
