View Full Version : Tripod for Sigma 300-800
Anyone any ideas on a good tripod/head combo for this lens (Sigma 300-800). It's a beast and needs something firm!
Oooh...I so nearly bought one of these myself, but opted for the Canon 500mm in the end.
I'd go for a solid pod with no centre column for that beast. The centre column just gives play where you don't want it. Go for one where the head just mounts to a platform on top of the legs. It'll need to be a pretty solid one so don't expect it to be cheap.
You'll need to look into getting a gimbal head to handle it safely too unless you already have one.

The Manfrotto 503 video head works well with this lens.

A friend of mine uses one but I don't know which legs he uses with it.
Was thinking that the Wimberley Gimble version II head would be best for it.
Anyone any ideas on the Gitzo legs?

A popular choice for big lenses . Check out also..
Wimberley Sidekick
Manfrotto 393 (Cheapest option)
Dietmar Nill Gimble Head (I use this one)

PM Pink Fairy - he uses a heavier Gitzo CF model for his Canon 600mm and I think thats the one you really need for such a heavy lens.

Loads of 'em on this guy's site. Check it out - he uses the 300 - 800 Sigma and the 500mm Canon mostly. What I wouldn't give to live where he does! ;)

Yeh...seen some his stuff before. Really is lucky with the wildlife. Not too bad here I suppose....local RSPB sanctuary 10 mins drive away, Snowdonia, local wildlife area down at the beach etc.....but not quite as exotic!
Andy (Pink Fairy) uses a Gitzo 1548 think this has been replaced by one of the GT range think its the GT3540 but expect to pay about 600 just for the legs ! :)
All depends on budget i guess, i have a Wimberley 2 for the 600mm, and its fantastic, CT's Nill Head is good too and the Manfrotto 393 for 99 quid has to be seen to be believed ! what value for money !
