I always used to use skylight or UV screw filter to protect the front element of my lenses. As the main purpose was as a baffle against damage I wasn't too particular about make (or I guess performance).

As I've got a bit more knowledgeable I've realised that inferior quality filters degrade the overall quality of the optics. Particularly looking at haze, the UV filter would seem to be preferable.

So.....

What screw-in front filter would you recommend? Bearing in mind that it is (a) a guard against damage to the lens and (b) needs to perform an image enhancing role.

This filter would come off before I put on the Lee filters for landscape work.

I use Hoya pro series, they are a bit pricey but when you have paid out a lot of dosh on your lens, it makes sense in the long run. You can also use skylight 1B filters and it does pretty much the same...Ian

I use Hoya UV filters on the front of all my lenses, I only take them off when shooting something that can cause an internal reflection such as fireworks.
