Went for a walk by the canal and over to Bosworth Battlefield today. Absolutely no pictures of the canal or battlefield, because nothing interetsting was happening, but I did manage to get my knees filthy crawling around on the floor photographing this lot 8) Quite pleased with the results.

I seriously like the Frog shot! I reckon you could make money from that one.
frogs and dandelions, great detail and very cool!
Not so fussed on the slugs but the dandelion is cracking - very sharp detail and nice bokeh.

The Dandelion portrait is spot on and the detail shot is astonishing, excellent stuff.
I agree with Steep, the frog shot is particularly good. Have you tried cropping out some of the reeds/plants and concentrating on the frog?

Wow, thanks SO much for all the positive replies guys. Bit taken aback by people liking the frog one... I didn't think it was anything special :)
All of this was with the 50mm lens and 12mm extension tube, with the exception of the frog, which was just the 50mm on its own. That picture was a sod to get. I was lying on my tummy, stretched halfway across the pond, wobbling like hell. I had got some support under me.
Thinking of going to my local camera place today to look at the macros... They have a 'buy now, pay 2006' offer on at the moment and I think the time has come for me to invest in another lens. Although I really want the 17-40L, it would be used predominantly for holiday snaps... I think I'd get more out of a macro of some kind. Hmmmmm....

We have hundreds of frogs in our pond at the moment, so I can practice away to my heart's content :)
I prefer the original - it shows the frog more in it's habitat.

Well if anyone is going to get the maximum buzz out of a macro I reckon it's you Kate. Macro does seem to be where your interest really lies. Dod's ladybird shot of yesterday was taken with the Canon 100mm Macro, and SDK has posted some pretty impressive fly and ladybird shots taken with it.
This has to be the macro lens for the serious macro photographer though.

The Canon 180mm L series. The working distance from your subjects with this lens is going to be superb, and it will also double as a useful mid range telephoto. I really want one of these, but it's going to have to wait till long after I've got my 100-400L which is now pretty imminent.
I know it's a lot of money and as Digital Failure said elsewhere most of us have a limited amount of dosh to buy new toys. I think you need to give the whole subject a lot of thought - you're only going to buy this lens once - cut back on meals and other non -essential stuff. :wink:
You certainly wont go wrong with the Canon 100mm though, and Matt referred in another thread to the Sigma 150mm Macro which has to be worth having a look at.

As the others have said, some top notch images there.
The slugs don't do much for me, but they do show what the slimey little ****ers are all about :shock:
The dandy is great, well worthy of a print.
The frog for me is the very best of the bunch in it's pre cropped state, the eyes are very sharp and the lilly stalks lead your eye into the centre.
I'm after a macro lens at the moment, but for me the 100mm would be too much of an overlap in focal lengths, and I can't justify the expense. So a 50mm will have to do for me.....possibly the ef-s 60 as an outsider too.
As an owner of the 17-40L, I'd say go for that too, it's much more than a lens for taking snaps with. I find it spends more time on my 20D than my longer lens.

hehe, I prefer the cropped version, I just find the big white thing at the top too distracting in the original. Ah well, just as well we're not all the same :)
Thanks for the lens advice CT and digitalfailure. I think you're right CT, macro, and more importantly, nature is where my heart is and a macro lens would be ideal. I'd love to get the 180mm L, but I really cannot afford that amount on a lens at the moment. Maybe when I've upgraded to a 20D :) I'm almost certain I'm getting the 100mm Macro though. Went out to get it today... to 4 different shops in fact. 2 were closed, and 2 were out of stock :( Really quite gutted because I wanted it to play around with today/tomorrow. I think I might order it online though. The extension tubes are great, but the focal distance, depth of field and reduced shutter speeds do hinder it somewhat.
Anyway, managed to get this shot this afternoon, with 50mm & 12mm extension tube. I couldn't see through the view finder, so I just stretched as far as I could, autofocussed and shot. Pretty amazed at how sharp it is :)

I'm just trying to work out whether 7 day shop plus credit card interest over 9 months would be cheaper than warehouseexpress interest free for 9 months... I think it would..
They're both pretty reliable Kate and you get speedy delivery from both.
7 DayShop sell a lot of grey import stuff. If you're buying a camera body it's something to be aware of as if you do have a problem in the warranty period Canon will insist on it being returned to the country of origin for repair at your expense. They're really obligated to honour the warranty regardless of where you bought it, but this is their way of giving you maximum hassle for not being a good girl and playing by the rules. :wink:
Unlike camera bodies, all lenses carry an International Warranty though, so you should have no problems anyway. I've bought from both places you've mentioned in the past and I woudn't hesitate to do so again.

Sorry.. I was referring to the first pic in the last two you posted, although your original frog is the killer one for me. I like the way he's looking straight at the camera.

Kate, as everyone else has said, those are top notch shots. I love them all but the dandelion is my favorite. Well done.
