A frequently asked question about Chipping church, Lancashire, (and the others with this feature) is "Why is there a dormer window in the roof?" Old churches often had these added in the 1500s and 1600s (or later in the 1800s) to throw light on to the wooden screen that separated the nave from the chancel. Today the south-facing window illuminates the pulpit which is in that position now the screen is no more. The modelling provided by the afternoon spring light prompted this shot.
