Hello, I was after some advice.

Wanting a wide angle lens for my 500D, seems to be either 10-20 Sigma, 10-24 Tamron or Canon 10-22 are available. All reviews are favourable, does anyone have any experience of these lenses side by side?
Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Trevor

I recently researched in these UWA lenses and was set to get the Canon but I ended up getting a used 10-20mm Sigma simply because I got a really good deal on it bought with a used 17-55mm.

From what I've read, it seems the Canon is the favourite and has the best IQ, but many people own the Sigma and are happy with it. I'm quite content with mine although the image quality is definitely not as good as my Canon 17-55mm. I've read many people have had 'soft' or 'bad' copies of the Sigma so this might be of a concern too (i'm not sure if mine is one of these so called 'soft' copies). I'm not too clued up on the Tamron so can't comment.

I think you need to decide how much use the UWA will get.......for me, it is not used as much as my 17-55 so I can settle for spending less even if it means not getting the best. However, if you will be shooting ultra wide most of the time, then I'd definitely go for the Canon.

You seem to have missed out the Tokina 12-24 and the 11-16. ;)

Yup, the Tokina 11-16 has some great reviews. I'd even think of buying one if I could find a shop that had one in stock for me to play with. Until then I'll have to stick with my 10-22, which is a fantastic lens. A friend has the Sigma 10-20 and isn't at all impressed with it - fairly soft on one side and serious vignetting.

I have the Sigma 10-20, bought s/hand from here so had a chance to see sample pics and very happy with it

It seems the Canon is better, but probably about 50% dearer, so to be expected really

Bit harsh comparing it to a 17-55mm IS, again far more pricy and a different lens really

Thanks all for your help.

Not sure I can justify the Canon yet, Amazon prices:

Canon 10-22mm £645.23
Tamron 10-24mm £364.37
Sigma 10-20mm £345.95
Tokina 11-16mm £534.99

Will probably go for the Sigma but from a reputable shop in case I get problems.

Thanks again

Trevor

check out the tokina 11-16mm, its very sharp and fast for indoors without flash, the 16mm bit also useable on ff

Just got the Tokina 11-16 and I had the Tokina 12-24 before.

If you can afford it get the 11-16, you WILL NOT regret it, it is so sharp even at f2.8 that I can use it for almost anything (interiors, exteriors, even portraits when I really have to).
