View Full Version : Battery grips query? yes or no?
When i had a 350D i brought a battery grip and thought it was a very good addon - increase in size made it feel better and espcially when connected to more heavier lens.
When i had a 20D/30D i brought the battery grip and thought why they didn't add the multi-controller to it? Would of made selecteing AF points easier when in portrait mode. And i found that i could easily hold the camera in portrait without the grip quite adeqately, so i didn't think it was an essential extra to buy.
Since i have a 5D i thinking shall i buy a grip for it - also anyone knows if the buttons are th esame as the grip for the 20d/30d so i will still have problems selecting af points when in portrait?

I bought the 5d today because the wind kept blowing papers off my desk :D
Think i have to pop into jessops to try one and see if its any different (before they go bust?)
I do miss not having 2 batteries for the camera, as the battery just seems to last forever with 2 batteries (does the sp look right ??)

The grip is the same for the 5d - just slightly angled for some reason. Theres no joypad on it :(
The af points arent ONLY selected by the multicontroller. You can set them in the custom functions of the 30d to be changed using the right hand button which also appears on the battery grip.
Im going from memory from when my camera worked of course..so may be wrong!! :D

20/30 and 5d's will all select Af point by pressing the af select button and using either the large thumb wheel, the little multiway controller or the small scroll wheel.
I was right! :D
Although I think my camera looks stupid with the battery grip on......especially with the 50mm lens.! Laughable!!
If its the button which i think you on about i use that for focusing custom function 4-1 from memory.

No its not the custom function associated with autofocus ae/fe lock stuff.
its the one which says that you want to use the multicontroller for autofocus points or the right hand button in conjuction with a scroll wheel,.,.

Not home yet so will check when i get home.
Opps \i forgot that i'm selling my 30D so I'm assuming this is ont he 5D aswell?
I do not like CF 13 because my face always ends up changing the focus point without my permission.

I think the 5D is much better with the Grip, and the grip is better constructed then the 20D/30D grip, but you have probably already hurd this elsewhere. One bad thing is that when you have a 5D with with grip with two batteries in it + 28/24-70 F2.8, it seems to feel alot heavier then the same combo on the 20D + grip. But then I guess I am just practicing for when I finally get a MIIN

Get a grip! you know it makes sense.
I think I'm going to leave the grip at the end of my list for the time being and build up my glass collection to what i want as i think i can survive without the for the time being.
