My son competed at the first round of the Scottish Downhill Association Downhill Champs last weekend. He has just moved up into youth from Juvenille and was feeling the pressure. He didn't do too badly and I was glad to see him complete safely as this was a FAST course through the trees.

This is him:

Took some others as well. This is a close one in practice:

Gotta say that the 5D is NOT the best for these type of shots - way too slow really.

Anyway hope you enjoy.....

Some great shots there Gary.

I stayed at Innerleithen on my holiday last year, it's a lovely place, and very handy as a base to go off exploring.

Nowt wrong with that lot. All pin sharp. The 5D might only do 3fps but by the looks of it you dont need more :D

None too shabby Gary. Did you use off camera flash for rider 900?

HIMUPNORTH

Paul - It is not the fps as I was mostly only taking single shots but the motor was often too slow to focus or was distracted by trees (some of them are amazingly sharp! :D)

Kev - Yep! Put flash on tripod, set to manual 1/4 power. Used cheap eBay slave triggers. Worked very well.

What flash was it......and these cheap triggers of which you speak :runaway:

Nice shots though

These are the type although not the seller I bought from http://tinyurl.com/2k2yf4

I had to send the originals back and was sent receivers with a higher trigger voltage. These have worked great.

Brings back memories, slid out on a tight bend and hit a tree breaking 6 ribs, eye socket and both wrists when I was 16. Couldnt ride for approx 18 months and lost it completely when I got back on again.

Nice shots, though I would of been a little peeved if somebody used a flash right in front of me (5).

Good luck to your boy,...

King.

I was thinking of going to do some of this sort of stuff at Kielder in Northumberland and was wondering what sort of reaction you get from the riders using flash - does it put them off or are they too focussed on the job in hand (no pun intended!)

Morning Bob - Just of to same place again, van is loaded, batteries are charged. It is a 4 hour drive (yawn).

In the dark places I can see a problem especially if shooting from straight in front. But usually side light balancing available light is more effective and not really a prob.

See ya!

The last two are very good, well captured. I'm also surprised the flash doesn't put them off.

Ta for the link to the triggers, look ideal.

Flash doesn't really bother the motox guys either unless you're head on, if it's off to the sides they don't even see it, so they say anyway.

Oh, and nice pics :)

Doesn't the Canon have a wireless flash capability so you can retain iTTL?

Nikon has. :D

To be honest I hadn't a clue, so checked and it does

Once I worked out how to use it the wireless is a very useful addition to the armoury, it saves having to use manual settings.

Are there the same opportunities to market event photography to the riders in the same way as the equestrian world? Or is it a totally different world

it saves having to use manual settings.

To be honest you are best to use manual flash. I set mine to manual at either 1/4 or 1/8th. This gives a decent recycle time and a day's life out of cheap Maplin AA's.

Select max sync speed (OK Nikon has us there) and play with ISO and aperture to get correct flash fill/ambient balance. You have to chimp a lot but the latitude is quite wide.

Wouldn't it be easier to use the wireless iTTL and use + or -ev compensation with the gun, thereby retaining a low ISO?

Colin, I can only repeat what I said. You will see in your preview screen what you want to achieve and not what the camera tells you what it thinks you should see (you follow?). Basically to balance ambient and fill light you are best to do this by eye ....... and it really isn't hard.

Bob. No probs there. I think you shoot what you are happy with. I am a happy Canon user but had I started elsewhere I would be quite happy with Nokon or any other brand.

PS to this. With off-camera flash you can often push the sync speed because you have selected MANUAL. I was up to 1/320 and top MTB tog Ian Linton was pushing 1/500th with his 1D with no adverse effects.

Doug Scott was taking faberooney shots on Sunday deliberately taking shots at 1/80th.

It's all numbers!

Now must get back to processing the 500 odd shots.........

At last something positive about using a 5D for sports! :D

Like this shot a lot - very dramatic. Time to head to the hills with the 10-20 on the front of the D200! :coat:
