Was on Ebay today and I came across a great looking 1D Mark III. I put a maximum bid in of £1600, thinking that If I win it I will have to sell my 2 month old 7D and grip an maybe put £400 to cover the rest.

Anyway i won it for £1270 and I'm made up :)

I'ts only 18 months old with 5,500 clicks and going by the description and the pics it looks in mint condition.

I'm going to sell my 7D and Grip so i should get that money back....result

I loved my 7D focussing speeds )I was coming from a 5D classic) but when viewing my images at 100% I felt a little dissapointed by the lack of sharp detail in the images. I think this was something to do with all those pixels on a small sensor.

Anyway the prospect of owning my first 1D body was too good to pass up. Can't wait for the delivery now

It should be a nice camera. Make sure it had AF service done, or send it off to Canon for a quick check up.

the ebay seller says he bought it in June 2008 so it is one that was produced after the AF problem models.

Where is the best place to send it for a check up? And do Canon charge for this seeing I am not the person who bought it new?

Better get an extra tube of toothpaste in and some lip balm whilst you're at it - you're going to be grinning like a lorry-load of Cheshire cats for some time to come.

(Declaration of interest: 1DII and 5DI here with long-range plans for something newer in 1D-topia in maybe 11 months' time.)

It's a freebie check that Canon do. If it has been done already they'll have a record of it. Get your serial number from the bottom of the camera, and call Canon service centre in Elstree. Say you've just bought it and ask if it has had the sub-mirror assembly check/replacement done. If it has, happy days. If not, they'll send you a box, get it collected, and then they'll send it back to you.

Here's some blurb from a quick google: http://www.ephotozine.com/article/Canon-EOS1D-Mark-III-AF-Sub-Mirror-defect-7056
