OOh shes a fab subject and obviously very comfortable in fron of the camera.

My fave is #2 which is kind of odd in a way as its a traditional-looking portrait of someone with a very non-traditional look.
If it were me though, Id crop it to just the tip of where the opening of her top ends ... makes me focus more on her face that way.

I love the last one too ... just looks a tad blown to the right of her nose/cheek which is a shame cos its a lovely pic & very vibrant ... just as I would imagine this person to be!

Really good ones these, Charlie. As said before, she is very photogenic, I dont know how you manage to take them though, Id never have the nerve to ask someone if I could take photos of them!

Thanks for the comments folks. We did a whole series of shots that day. I gave her a disc & some prints a have not seen her since. Shame really as she is very photogenic.
She was a total stranger to me. I just met her & told her I would like to do some pictures. We then had a coffee in the local tearoom. That was interesting as the owners were standing behind the kitchen door listening to every word. We did "spice" it up a bit just for them!
As to Janice not having the nerve. I would not have the nerve to do a wedding.

Yes I favor the last one as well, it seems to put out that biker-type feel.

InaGlow- I understand your comment on cropping to put emphasis on her face but then it would cut her tattoo leaving you to wonder what it's supposed to be. Just throwing an idea out there I could be dead wrong, haha.

Neither have I ! I promised a friend, and I wish I hadnt!

But when the biker girl asked you why you wanted to take photos (as people inevitably do) what do you say?

I am being serious now.
I have asked many people to pose for me in the past & have had refusals & no shows. In the main though when the subject sees you are being honest & not just wanting them to get their kit of they usually realise you are paying them a compliment.
As to the biker in question. She as I mentioned is a goth (& a witch) & I wanted to do some goth stuff. Still do if I can find the right girl for the stuff I have in mind. Romantic goth with long flowing dresses etc. That will make you raise an eyebrow Janice!
Anyway the biker got totally into the project & even suggested locations etc.
Does that help? If not ask away.

So you say "Do you mind if I take you picture please?" and they say "No,, that's fine" Then you take a few and they say "What do you want it for?" so what do you say then?

OK, you happen to be doing a project. But if it was me and I wasnt, what do I say?

"Because I want to!" ? :D

Basically thats it. I usually offer a few prints or a Cd & always ask them if they want to bring a "minder" to the shoot.
Remember you are paying them a compliment.
I have found models in cafes, shoe shops & just passers by in the street. Always approach someone where they do not feel threatened. Dark streets are out.
One interesting thing I have noticed a couple of times now is that some really pretty girls have low self esteem & do not think they are pretty.
It should be easier I would have thought for a female photographer than a man to approach pretty girls. I never go for the definate "poser" types prefering the more natural look. If biker is natural!
The girl on Painted Face thread I think is really good looking without all the make up etc.

But I wouldnt ask them to come and model.

I just mean to take a photo of them in the street, at that moment.

It seems a bit strange when asked why, to say "its my hobby and I just keep them."

I have never done that as I am usually looking for a "face " for a project.

You could say something like. I saw you coming along the street & think you are very photogenic. Do you mind if I take a few shots of you for a club competion. Something like that & offer a print by way of thanks. That way if they say yes you can keep in touch in case you want to do studio stuff.
I also make a point of never asking a model for their phone number/address on the first meeting. The important thing is the model must feel safe & happy.
