View Full Version : New Canon CPS
is now launched, they allow both the 40 & 50d but no EF-S lenses.....makes no sense.
now I'm not talking every EF-S lens, but the 17-55 f/2.8 10-22 should both be there, and i'm sure there are a few others that I just can't think of right now.
What do other people think?

I think in my professional working life.. I've never seen another pro with an EF-s lens! This isn't a derogatory comment.. merely an observation! I myself, would love a 10-20 but I haven't a body to put one on :(
What I find strange is that the 1D MKII is no longer acceptable?

Damn, i would qualify if my second body wasn't the 400.
On EF-S lenses, I suppose they expect most pros wont have/use them because most pros that are members of CPS use the 5D and 1D series bodies which don't accept them. You never know, thye might add a couple of exceptions such as the ones youve mentioned. Maybe email them and point them out since it's quite possible they have been overlooked.

I often use a 17-55 at weddings.
I know a lot of wedding photographers who use the 17-55 at weddings.
it seems more an upgrade strategy.
I have emailed them

That is strange actually. I didn't even bother checking which 1-Series were still accepted. I assumed all of them would be. Looks like I won't be getting a MkIIn after all. May have to save a little longer for a MkIII or win the lottery/rob a bank for a MkIV.
Tom N.
they have silver gold and platinum, even if you've spent a fortune on the top lenses, if you're second body is a 40d or 50d you can only join as a silver member.
make the EF-S lenses silver membership to match the bodies.

1d Mk II is accepted
The MKIIN is still accepted, but only up to Silver membership.. the MKII has 3 little black x's next it :(

I remember looking at this a few months ago and the EF-S 10-22 and EF-S 17-55 f2.8 were on the list... Doesn't make sense to remove 'em 'cos they're both first rate lenses.
Very strange! :cuckoo:

Mine are still good for silver, but what a pain it was to get through the update! I had to reenter everything 3x times. Only Safari worked in the end. That made me think about going to the dark side.
It is nice to know they still regard 40D as a usable camera, and still accept 100mm non-L.

Ah my mistake. We'll see how money goes. I doubt being a member of CPS would benefit me personally that much though. So perhaps I shouldn't be in such a rush.

Mk11n is on the list. I guess they are knocking some older model off the list assuming that pros are likely to upgrade. Therefore selling on the mk11 and earliers models to enthusiasts. The only difference is the turnaround time with repairs anyway.

whoops just saw it on the list, that also sucks.

I saw them both on the list when I was looking at signing up, then it closed.
I agree they're both excellent lenses, and if they were made to fit full frame they would both be L lenses for sure.

The way Canon probably see it, is that for full frame they already have L lenses that cover those angles; the 16-35 2.8, and 24-70 2.8
what a pain it was to get through the update! I had to reenter everything 3x times. Only Safari worked in the end.
I had problems also, all my equipment was there but it was throwing up errors saying the serial numbers were wrong, I eventually got it sorted then proceeded through to the end and ticked the box to say I agreed to the conditions then when I pressed enter it came up with a server error:bang: When I managed to get logged back in all my gear had gone so I had to re enter it all manually:shrug:
After that when I was entering the items it kept coming up saying "that serial number is already registered to another person":bang: I eventually got it done but it took a couple of hours.
Did you have to re enter all the serial numbers?
See above:thumbsdown:
I am sure when I joined up originally you had to prove that you were a working photographer but I wasn't asked anything about it unless it is just carrying my original membership criteria over.
Cheers
Ian
Is everyone having to re-register as they don't recognise my email address any more :(

I managed to log in with my old details but it said if you didn't confirm your membership by July (I think) you account would be deleted.

Mine expires next month anyway which is why I wanted to get it done while I remembered. I contacted the CPS team yesterday and now just need to wait and see if they respond I suppose

Cant see a reason why i would join as a silver member, just get a 5 day turn around, which is what i've got from CPS approved repairers anyway?

08-04-2010, 17:25
Gives 2 day turn around not 5 day, and a loan camera should they not manage the 2 day turn around.
I had the smae problem re-registering - had to re-enter serial numbers as the last four digits were all shown as xxxx.
Eventually got it sorted after a few abortive attempts.

One small oddity.....
Canon announced that support for the 28-70/2.8L had finished in December 09 but the CPS site still shows it to be supported

Just tried and have more than the required glass, but only 1 qualified body, 20D too old in the tooth. Think I'll wait until next month to upgrade, cars in the garage :'(
I wouldn't bother with the quicker turn around, just register your stuff and have done with it as its still currently free, some other countries have to pay to get the different levels of service.

aye, shame as they were listed before. :(
Damnit - if I had a 50D instead of my 500D I'd qualify with my 5DII, 17-40f4L, 24-70f2.8L and 70-200f2.8L IS II :(

85f1.2L no longer supported.
Bloody Hell that was a pain! I must have entered all the details at least 4 times before it was finally accepted.
Well I now qualify for an 'upgraded' Silver membership, despite owing 2 qualifying bodies and 5 qualifying lenses - the lenses alone being worth £13K at todays prices!
I think Canon are taking the pee a bit here - I could pick up a 1DMk3 or even a 5D MK1 for comparative peanuts and qualify for Gold or Platinum membership. Doesn't seem to make a lot of sense.

I've just renewed mine and have been "upgraded" to a silver.
Awesome there must have been enough people complaining that they added them...brilliant.
60 Macro was another good lens that's now been added.
Why are people complaining about a service that is free. You get a free magazine and maybe slightly faster turnaround times.
I also think you had to re enter your serial nos as it proves you still have the gear, some people may not bother to remove gear they have since sold on.

Exactly as my experience. I emailed my rep - we'll see if they fix it.
re magazine - I received a copy yesterday. So they still send it, but for how long?
The morale is - USE SAFARI when upgrading
No problems here updating details for six bodies, nine lenses and three accessories using Windows 7 and IE8. All went through first time.

I tried several times yesterday morning but got nowhere, I emailed them and received a reply saying they had problems, apologised and asked me to try again.
I had already tried last night and succeded, a bit of a pain entering all the serial numbers again, I also added the purchase date which took a long time to find everything. I had not noticed that the first few times.
I got an email almost immediately saying I had gold membership, hopefully I shall not need to try the benefits.
Paul.
It's probably no surprise that they are having problems if everybody is trying to update their database at the same time, give it a week or two and it will probably be OK.
Cheers
Ian
I've just been through the process and all went smoothly.
You have to re enter the last 4 digits of the serial numbers of your kit, which is fair enough as they don't want people registering kit they no longer own. Confirm your personal details, and that's it.
From my experience I think whatever problems they were having seem to have been resolved :)
EOS mag stopped being given free sometime last year
I got the magazine today (though it's titled "CPN" not "CPS"). The latest issue is actually fantastic. There's some stunning photography in there, particularly the dark animals by Boza Ivanovic (http://www.bozaivanovic.com/v3/stories.asp?st_id=14&stp_id=234).
On the benefits of CPS - unless you need a repair or have a problem, you wont see any. But if you've got a problem then flashing the card will get excellent service. I've had a free and 1-day turnaround fix of my 70-200, ditto for a 50 1.4, and a very rapid in & out sub-mirror check for my 1DIII. Well worth it.

You still get the Canon CPN mag but you used to get a free subscription to EOS Magazine http://www.eos-magazine.com/ free as part of the membership but they stopped this last year.
The fast turnaround is the only reason I am a member as a camera that doesn't work can't make any money.
Cheers
Ian
To get the fast turnaround do you need to send it direct to Canon in Elstree? Or could I take it into AJ Johnstone in Glasgow and get the fast turnaround?

Elstree - I sent my 1Ds ii in for a replacement shutter. They received it Friday morning - they called me Friday morning. I confirmed the repair Friday afternoon, they'd fixed it by 2pm today. Very impressive.

Thanks Phil, its actually for the 100mm macro that has a nasty fungus infection :D
Didnt realise I had enough Kit to get a gold level CPS and the fast turnaround (ignore my signature its way out of date).

Yeah - I never really knew what you had to do to get CPS. I called last week about the shutter & they asked me about CPS. I then tapped a few serial numbers in & bingo - Gold CPS!

I haven't re-registered yet. I'm really not looking forward to having to re-enter nearly 200 serial numbers....
I have an interesting dilemma as to whether (and how far) I should upgrade my membership. With a 40D and a 5D I'm Silver; but the reduced repair turnround time for Gold and Platinum membership is HUGELY valuable to me. (I've spend about £5000 on Canon repairs/servicing in the last year.) Decisions, decisions ...
It's also interesting to see how the USA CPS scheme differs from ours. The requirements are slightly different (eg 2x 20D is good enough for Silver membership), but only the Silver level is free; Platinum costs $500 per year! Perhaps we shouldn't complain. Details here (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=MultiMiscPageAct&key=CPS_Member&keycode=CPS&fcategoryid=2647).
Stewart, In the US i think it would make sense for you to pay the $500 as it gets you 60% off the repairs which could save you a lot of money.
But here, I dont think we get any discount just the quicker turnaround and loan equipment. I would have though the 2 day turnaround if you could get it would save you a lot of money as you can obviously rent the kit out again quicker.
