View Full Version : I'm going back to film for a play....
Well, I say going 'back'. This is actually my first venture into film as a photography 'enthusiast'.
My dad died in 1997, and when clearing his house out, I got his old Praktica MTL5-B, along with a couple of lenses.
2 x 50mm Pentacon's (f1.8)
1 x 70-162 Prinzflex (f3.5)
It has been sat in a box ever since. When I took up photography as a hobby, I kept saying I would try turning my hand to it one day, but I never got round to it.
Until today.
After receiving those "The Photo" magazines yesterday, I decided to dig the camera out and posted a shot of the kit on flickr (That I took in 2002). After a bit of geeing up from another flickr / DVDForums member, I went to Aldi, got some recommended film (Kodacolor VR Plus), and gave the camera a jolly old going over with a cloth, lens cloth, and my lens pen/brush. Once spruced up, I've loaded a film, and have already taken a few shots.
It has Stop Down Metering, which I'm relying on (aswell as my limited knowledge of being able to see how much light is in a shot, and roughly guessing settings).
Anyway, anotehr 30 or so shots to go, and I'll be getting the film processed, scanned in, and posted on here (Well, the ones that are exposed and focused correctly of course).
Even using the split screen manual focusing is fun, not having the advanced systems of my 30D to fall back on...hehe

I for one will look forward to seeing your results Marcel! I've been playing with film myself over the last few weeks although not on anything as "vintage" as your kit - that stuff looks like fun!

Just dont get into developing! Misses wont be happy if the bathroom becomes a dark room :p I love developing film (granted its mainly because of the smell of the chemicals) ;)
Hmm maybe I should get a battery and a film for my old Ricoh SLR camera....
Second thoughts maybe not :lol:

You make me want to start up one of my K-1000's and maybe even get the B&W tank I've been threatening to get.
Until recently I still have been shooting LOTS of film but as I don't do crime scene work anymore I really miss film!!!

Oh lordy there's no danger of me dipping my hand into the developing tank (proverbially speaking of course).

Nice one Mr Booth! I bought an EOS3 recently for a bit of B&W fun and to improve my discipline - recently finished my first roll of film (after a month or so :embarrassed: ) and need to get it processed so i can fire up the film scanner.
Look forward to seeing the results you get :thumbs:

I've been shooting slide film recently, as my camera club has regular slide comps. Certainly makes you think about composition and exposure more.

I do wish people would stop talking abuot film, I'm trying so hard not to purchase some film kit! Ebay is bad ummmmmmmmkay
That was my first camera way back in '88

lol i have an old Canon AE1 Program sitting in a bag here, was my second camera i think ! Also got a EOS 50E as well ! Not that bothered about going back to film though costs too much ! lol
I've still got a few rolls of film left to develop from my OM10 - I still love shooting film (even though I'm hopeless at it :lol:) but it reminds me of borrowing my parents camera when I was younger & being terrified of messing it up - first time I'd ever used a real camera.
Ive only ever shot one roll of film in my lifetime. And that probably wont change, no matter how fun it is!
Im a child of the digital age you see. :p

My AE 1 is in top nick and I have about 6 lenses for it, today its worth nothing but to me when I bought it 25 years + ago it was the dogs. I must put some film through it and hear the powerwinder purr again. I am the opposite of Jimmy I hated the smell of the darkroom and filling my bin up with expensive photo paper....Ian :canon:

So its not just me then..... Ive been stocking up on film recently........Velvia is on backorder though....grrrrr
Might even hog the bathroom and do some printing..... I do miss it...

That won't happen. Ilford are re-introducing some films due to popular demand. I can easily get through anything from 2 - 10 films per month :eek:
It has to be said, there is a certain something about shooting on film. No chimping, the anticipation of what the shot will come out like, and as others have already said, it does make you think so much more about lighting, composition etc. Knowing that you only have 24 or 36 shots, and not being able to delete the naff ones does make you try harder to get everything right in camera. It's just the processing the film that's the real pain.

i agree, bought a eos5 body last year and while ive only put 3 films through it, i thoroughly enjoyed venturing into film, considering that my first proper camera was a DLSR, its going back in time and it has definetly helped my photogrpahy
It's the sound of a film camera isn't it.....there's something about that mechanical whirr as the film winds on....! :love: Every shot I took on my 500N on holiday made me go "ahhhh!"

Having just spent 9 days shooting in Africa with 2 EOS 3s going 'clunkzip' about 100 times daily I have to agree. My digitals sound rather soulless in comparison. Anybody want a 30d and 5d for £50 each? (only joking :p ;))
Gotta love film - I just spent all weekend shooting with an old Bronica SQ-A, can't wait to see the results :D

That is the problem for me .... Having to wait. :D
I think thats one of the things I'm going to enjoy most. By the time I get through this film, the shots will have gone out of my head, so it will be refreshing to see them again when they're developed.
The instant 'feature' of digital is surely a bonus, but I think it's a bit of a double edged sword, you always see your shot too soon after the event. At least with film, you get to see it all over again later on, with fresh eyes.
