View Full Version : Monopod Suggestions?

I need to get Jan a monopod, but obviously it will come in pretty useful at times for the 500 too when I don't want to take the tripod. I remember seeing one with a trigger release which lets the whole thing telescope to the desired length, but I'm damned if I can remember what brand it was.

Any ideas on who makes it or pointers to other ones they'd recommend?

Thanks in advance.

It was Manfrotto ... or rather I know they do one with a trigger release ... about £100 notes if I remember correctly and Digital Depot had a sale last time I looked ... ... can't remember the model number though ...

I have a 560B that comes with a QR head and spring loaded feet that I find excellent for that extra bit of steadying ... :D

HTH Cedric ... ;)

i have been thinking about getting a Monopod for the 600, as the tripod takes up huge amounts of real estate when extended ! lol but not sure how practical that is ! have seen someone using a 500 on one

Wood was cheaper then though CT, and the 1HP was purchased and stabled seperately :D

I have the 684B here Cedric which is exactly the same I can sell you as I have upgraded to a Gitzo.:)

It has had little use and works just like new.

Also got a Manfrotto RC141 tilt and pan head to go on it if required complete with QR plate to fit.:naughty:

You gotta love Warehouse Express - 7.40am this morning on the dot. I'm on first name terms now with the City Link guy.

What a fantastic quality but of kit, I'm seriously impressed with the build quality and design of this monopod. It offers genuine one-handed operation (Janice!! :nono:) with the folding foot plate on the bottom, and the safety trigger is a good addition to the design. This needs some serious playing with now. :D

She opened the box this morning and was really chuffed with it. She's not very big so the weight of the kit is quite an issue for her and she can well see how it's going to be a big help to her. :)

As and when she can get it off you I'd presumed ... ;)

Missed this thread. I have the 685B and whilst it is nicely made the one way slide lock action can get quite annoying. Once partly extended it will freely slide longer as the trigger only locks it from collapsing not extending. Means you can't set it to a length and just carry it somewhere else without the risk of it getting longer. Think I'd take some duct tape with me if I was going to be moving about with it a lot!

This chap seemed to know I was after test shots and was quite obliging.

20D with 100-400 on the monopod and 800 ISO in poor light so it's quite noisy and I haven't run any NR on it.

Good point Robert, I just checked and you're right. It's so quick to re-adjust the height though I don't really see it being a problem. Jury's out. :)

Not a bad test shot Cedric ... :D ... you didn't say what exposure you managed though assume it was at the long end too ...

Good point Rog - it was actually 1/640 so it was pretty rapid. More important than the actual shutter speed though is the aid to stability to keep that AF point over the eye. Here's a better test though...

This was 1/125th at f10 with the 180 Macro and 200 ISO. I know I'd really be struggling hand held with this one as this lens is a pig to hand hold up close.
