After deliberating on spending this amount of money on a sturdy tripod I finally caved in and got myself a Gitzo G1548 to support my 500mm f.4 IS.
To say these things are built like a tank is an understatement..
Everyone who owns one says you will never know how good they are until you use one, They are 100% correct. Solid as a rock..:naughty:
I haven't used it in anger yet as it only came yesterday but you can literally hang from it and it doesn't move..

Sensible tripod for a big lens. No silly centre columm to compromise rigidity.

It's the Wimberley Gimble Head for long lenses Rog. Tim's is the full version but they do a smaller version called the Sidekick. You can check 'em both out on Warehouse Express. :)

Great tripod, my friend has one. I was thinking of getting one but its been discontinued now and replaced with a new model thats 'supposed' to be lighter but more rigid, although it has slightly thinner legs from what I've seen so not sure how less bulk and less weight makes for a more sturdy tripod - especially if its windy?!
