Each Canon Sales Company reserves the absolute and final right to accept or disqualify CPS members.
However, there are general membership guildelines.

Those who wish to become a CPS member must meet the following minimum equipment ownership requirements:

* 2 Professional SLR bodies
* 3 L-series lenses

EOS Magazine - That's 17 quids savings and a good reason for joining (I am counting days :( )

I must say that the EOS Magazine is simply quality stuff less so much of the ad crap u get in commercial magazines.

They'll send two when he gets his first, they're pretty good like that. it's probably just bad timing with the subscription.

i was gonna say im awaiting the delivery of a 1 dmk2 but that would have been a yawn.

anyway back to the point, why do they say you need 3 L series lenses are they the only lenses canon count as professional. a photoshop in manchester told me that the 70 - 300 IS lens and the 28 - 135 IS lens are the same as L series lenses without a certain coating is this true. Im ordering the 17 - 40 f4 L and the 70 - 200 f4 L

Ok then, a few questions for if Canon do decide to make the CPS a subscription based service.

Would you pay?
How much would you pay?
What would you expect for the money?
What further services would you hope to see?
Should they drop their Min requirements? (2x Bodies and 3 lenses)

I dont work for them obviously, i just think it could be interesting to see others opinions.

good questions, but:
1. No
2. Already paid IMO
3. The resources and content are fit for purpose and i don't see a resource cost in this for Canon
4. Difficult question - i think what is offered currently is suitable for 'free' membership
5. No :D

What are your views?

Darryn
01-05-2007, 10:49
And Ill answer the questions myelf.. :)

Would you pay? Yup.

How much would you pay? Upto £100/year

What would you expect for the money? Same magazine, free phone contact number

What further services would you hope to see? Id like to see more invitational events with the Canon range, also id like special offers and a priority ordering method for new products (1dMkIII etc)

Should they drop their Min requirements? (2x Bodies and 3 lenses) Hmm.. good question, i would like the magazine to stay aimed at pros, so it doesnt need to cover the basics, but, i feel anyone with 1 canon body and 1 lens should be able to join and get the same service as a pro.

1) Yes
2) Dunno up to £50 a year
3) Not sure really, the mag seems to cover a lot, it would be nice to see some more features in it bearing in mind it's a quarterly mag.
4) It'd be nice to have CPS be able to try new equipment in the field without buying or renting it (i.e. possibly a points allocation annually allowing you to borrow equipment for events, higher level equipment costing more points, thereby allowing a fair system whereby some people can't just keep borrowing the 600 F4L IS / 1D MK III and never buying it, as well as giving all a fair chance at borrowing the equipment they want to)
5) This I'm in 2 minds on, the gear doesn't make the photographer, however Canon obviously can't just allow everyone in with whatever gear as this would have to be subsidised by Canon (even with a sub fee I doubt they could realistically keep a service going without a subsidy from Canon itself)

CT
02-05-2007, 08:58
Well you're also supposed to earn your living in whole or part from photography as a condition of registering with CPS, quite apart from the minimum gear requirements. I can't see Canon going out of their way to be too picky over this with people who've parted with the necessary wonga to buy the required gear, so I suspect the subscriptions if they come, may be to thin out the numbers of new registrations.

I couldn't see me paying quite honestly - when I actually tot up the value of the gear I own it's quite a frightening amount and I'd expect good support from any manufacturer for a customer spending that sort of cash irrespective of membership of an elite club.

What is very good about CPS membership is that you get to register the serial numbers of all your gear (well the main bits) with them on line, so you always have a convenient record you can check with. Hands up anyone who hasn't recorded the serial numbers of all their gear? ;)

1) Yes

2) Up to £100 a year seems reasonable. Any more then I would have to consider. I mean insurance is already at £200 or so a year, so 100 does not seem too much

3) The only thing that really want to see is 1-2 free cleaning/calibration for everyone with a subscription (book 1 month in advance to not have a log jam). This is something that I would pay for. Maybe run a series of workshops thorughout the year, and you get discounts to them (workshops can't be free if they are good one IMHO)

4) I don't see why this needs to change. I guess this is currently their payment model as they make the money on the equipment rather then the CPS payment. One nasty way they could possibly change the requirements for CPS could be here. (think what would happen if they changed the equipment requirements every year to only include cameras released in the last 2 or 3 years).

Anyway I have been a memeber for over a year. Don't really use the service much, mainly for the magazine, but I forgot to change my address with them, so I did not get the last two magazines, or the christmas diary.

I think canon should make a charge for canon owners with 1 body and free for those with more than one as it is now. How do canon know if you have the right amount of gear now and after your accepted you sell some of it on?and do they cancell your membership if you do?

As I knew the person buying my 300d wouldnt be registering it with Canon I left it on my Gear list until I repaced it with a 1dmkII.

Would you pay?
NO - Its a service for working pro's.

How much would you pay?
Nothing.

What would you expect for the money?
Priority on buying new kit.
Better access to loan equipment.
A faster turnaround for equipment repair.

What further services would you hope to see?
More canon service at events during the year.

Should they drop their Min requirements? (2x Bodies and 3 lenses)
NO - but don't forget you have to be a pro - ie most of your income from photography, and they can ask you to prove that if they wish, I can see that becoming mandatory soon.

From the times ive use CPS I have been happy with the service.

Les McLean

What of the big advantages of CPS membership is their priority turnaround for repair/service.
On the two occasions I've used them (once for repair/once for service), they have had my camera back within 4 working days.
You just need to remember to put your CPS number on the package when you send it in.

I have a nifty fifty, 70-200 L and a 30D, If I spend under a £100 on a 10D off ebay I would qualify.

Would like to know how Canon decide what you need as an EF-S 17-55 2.8 cost more than a 17-40 L but because it's an EF-S they think a pro would not use it.

Well there is no way I am a pro (I'm only just above a snapper) and would think the rule should be tougher to join.

Other problems on that list include not listing the 300mm F4 non-IS. Quite scarily though if they include that I qualify

Sounds like the restriction based on gear is basicaly just so they have people spending money. Presumably they should be checking to see if you are actually a pro though.

No actually. Even though they list the 50 F1.8 (or the F1.4 for that matter) on that list, it actually does not count. You have to have 3 lenses that are actually L lenses, even though they list others that are not (EF-S lenses don't count either).

At least this was the case when I joined.

You have to have a minimum of

2 bodies (any from the list) and 3 lens (any from the list)

The 50 1.8 does count.

This list was obtained from Canon professional services yesterday.

The criteria of it being an L lens was at the out set of CPS introduction and the rules have changed.

Having the minumum does not automatically gain you a CPS membership as all memberships have to be approved by the regional reps.

The list is a list of all items which are covered by CPS membership, if it isnt on the list you cannot use CPS privileges against that item.

Just the same here, Total shambles TBH..

The 50 1.8 does count.

The criteria of it being an L lens was at the out set of CPS introduction and the rules have changed.

Ok that is news to me then. When I originally joined, I listed a 50 F1.8 as an item but was told that did not count. But they are pretty good, as they told me why I did not get approved, and I just put in the serial number of one of my other lenses, and everything was good.

Do you think it is really worth it for basically the mag,
Or is it just another way of selling more L Lenses and bodies.

First time I've looked at this thread!

I just clicked the link in the first post, filled in all the boxes and clicked submit. Just got the email back saying we will let you know.

So it works here :)

I sometimes think that.

BUT, they also offer priority repairs to CPS members, which for a working professional is a godsend, especially if a breakdown means you are without essential kit and can't do certain shooting.

For me is was a case of why not. I already had the gear, so I thought I might as well join. I mean I was going to buy the gear regardless.

You can get loan equipment out of them if your goes in for repair etc. and the faster turn around is good, you also get a canon service stand at some of the major events, just in case your gear is not behaving its self.

I might benefit from joining then. My gear misbehaves all the time. No matter how much I tell it off, it still goes naughty and takes crap pics.

You're application is allocated to a local rep who vets it and contacts you in due course- they don't rush! ;)

I can't see Canon going out of their way to upset someone who owns as much Canon gear as you do Tim. :D

Nice one mate....

The card is sure impressive looking, but unfortunately is neither weather proofed, or scratch resistant, which I find rather ironic, considering the level of equipment they want you to have.

As far as I am aware, the service is still CPS, but the information network has changed to CPN. (at least that is what the email I originally got from Canon said).
