whats the equivalent in canon for this camera? there is 1 selling quite cheap. is it an oldish model?

Assume you mean the D40 - it was the most basic, entry level camera. No in-body motor, so you are 'limited' to recent lenses ...not really a problem for most people. Only 3 focus points, which can be a bit limiting sometimes.

Having said that, it's a camera that many love for it's size, weight, image quality, low light performance and flash sync speed. Have a look at the reviews at www.bythom.com There were a lot of unhappy people when Nikon replaced it.

Canon equivalent - entry level models from 2 - 3 of years back.

For me the D40 is the better camera to the 400d Canon. I still have my D40 as a backup to my new D90 and it produces wonderful images.
