Purchased Sony a700 to-day and all Minolta lens work fine apart from my Sigma 400mm 5.6 (Minolta fit). When I attach lens I get error message on LCD screen "lens not attached"
Can anybody tell me why this lens will not work please. I have cleaned the electrical contacts, but still no joy.

Its not compatible - this is a very old lens and will only work fine Minolta 1st generation AF models - the 5000, 7000 and 9000
On your A700, if you go to the menu, you can still force the camera to shoot by selecting the "release without lens" option, however you won't be able to stop the lens down, and you'll need to manually focus it.
To clarify on the Sigma 400 f5.6 - it's the early copies of this that are not compatible with the Alphas - later ones will work fine but beware the A700 fast focus and Sigma AF gear stripping issues which are sometimes an issue with the basic f5.6 version.
