Bag 1:
I'm going on holiday in 2 weeks tomorrow (hopefully :() and would like to take as hand luggage the following:

Canon 500D
Laptop 17"
Accessories (Charger/batteries etc)
iPod
External harddrive (backups)
Plus the usual holiday junk

Any recommendations?

Don't really want to spend too much (£45 seem fair?)

Bag 2:
Would like a smaller bag, which would simply take the 500D + 18-55 lense + batteries for day to day carry while out there.

A bag that did both would be ideal :)

Lowepro fastpack 350 will carry all that gear in - got mine second hand off ebay for £40 quid but they go for near £70 new.

Really good, strong, and lots and lots of support for your shoulders and back

Kata DR-467 would do the job admirably and take a tripod too

I agree with Rich, I've got a Kata DR-466i, fits laptop, 500D, 3 lenses, batteries, filters and a couple of sarnies. Paid £50 new from Wilkinson, took a week to turn up as advertised.

Thanks, I think that's winning for me so far. I can see the laptop goes in the rear, and the camera eqiupment in the front, are there any other compartments for other stuff (mobile/chargers/passports etc)?

What's the discount we get?

Looks like it only does up to 15" screens though :(

Lowepro CompuDaypack, only £34.99 here (used it with a laptop, 500D and 4 lenses with one whole compartment to spare)

Thanks for the latest link :) Would prefer black though (as boring as it is)

I've added those to the short list, now to find a cheap black one :)

Just come up against a small problem, luckily I haven't bought a bag yet, but Thomas Cook's website state the following size restriction:

Carry on hand luggage = 43 cm x 28 cm x 23 cm

LowePro CompuDayPack = 44.5 cm x 35 cm x 21.5 cm

LowerPro FastPack 350 = 49 cm x 31.5 cm x 24.5 cm

I'm gutted :( I assume there really is no way around this?

Will I get stopped?
