View Full Version : Hawk Conservancy, Andover - Wed 7th July
I've never been but high on my list of places to visit this year is the Hawk Conservancy in Andover, Hampshire. Would be nice to go with some fellow photographers to share some tips etc.
No date planned but I was thinking June time frame.
If anyone is interested leave a reply and we can organise a date.
If anyone is an expert/local and wants to take over the organising feel free!

Been once before and it's a great place so would be interested in coming along. The flying demonstrations especially are a fantastic opportunity.
Just don't make it the 13th as there is already a mocro meet and WHF meet that day. I love the place so depending on when may join you too
sounds like a good day out, will keep watching for a date :)

I've got my name down for the Exbury meet on the 13th so won't be then.
Okay so 6th, 20th or 27th June? I can do any at the moment.. Any better/worse for those interested?

Sounds good to me.........I can do that day:thumbs:
Be aware.
Good Positioning is at a premium during flying displays. Over the weekends, there is a bunch of hard core regular visitors (of which I used to be one)with very heavy gear. On a good Sunday you may find 10-15 photographers with long lenses (and I mean long 500mm + white lenses) fighting for the best spots. Best to go weekdays instead.

I must have been lucky when I went as it was a weekend, summer and fine weather, yet no problem with getting a good position. It was later in the day with the last displays though (which is better for light anyway).
Anyway, weekdays are no go for me. Working.
This bunch has a tendency of arranging expensive excursions over the summer months. (African safaris and the like)...But trust me, I was part of the group for a year and every weekend we were there in force.
Also for the last display most of them tend to take pictures from the hide out (members only area).
I am not trying to put you off, they are a nice bunch of people, very much in to BIF photography. They are incredibly knowledgeable and eager to help with tips and tricks. Just be aware that if they are there in force it can get difficult to get a nice position that's all.
I had always thought that Andover was in Wiltshire... but it does appear to be in Hampshire :P.
I live down the road in Salisbury (which is why I thought it was Wiltshire!), and would be very interested in coming along, as long as it's AFTER my exams :P. My last one's on June 25th.
Anything happening on this ?
I'm still planning on going. Been away for a few weeks on hols.
So when we going
My weekends are filling up fast so the 20th or later would suit me best. although could possibly do a bit of juggling around

I find many Saturday's hard as I work at Marwell quite a few of those.
How about we settle on Sunday 20th and see who can make? Of course I guess it's weather dependant too - don't want to be stuck in a field in pouring rain!

That might make me a maybe then. My Sundays tend to be consumed with mountain biking at the moment, but will just have to see what's going on that weekend nearer the date.
20th is good for me so made it a definite
Am now working that weekend so not sure I can make it. :( And seems this thread went quiet... I am terrible at arranging things sorry!

I'm interested, where is the meeting point going to be and what time?
It's a 78 mile drive for me that also includes the M25 so I would rather not set off during rush hour traffic.
I could drive down earlier and do breakfast at the services or pop in and see my sister who lives in Basingstoke but I don't think she'd want me knocking on the door at 8am :)
Hi Daren, it's not far off that distance for me, takes over an hour to get there but well worth it, there is so much going on during the day.
I would suggest meeting in the main carpark around 10am as there is a lot going on throughout the day. but if you can't make it you can always catch up later, the main site isn't that big.
Just to give you an idea of what goes on on :
10:00am Open
11:00am Wild Red Kite and Heron Feed from the hides.
11.30am Vulture Restaurant
Vulture feed and Keeper's talk. Watch how the birds interact with each other, and learn about the work the Trust is carrying out with endangered vultures around the world.
11.45am World of Raptors (lower flying grounds)
A display featuring a wide range of Birds of Prey from around the world. There is an opportunity to hold a British Bird of Prey after this display.
2.00pm Valley of the Eagles ( Reg’s Meadow)
A spectacular display where eagles, kites and vultures fill the sky. Watch wild raptors joining in the display.
(During certain times during the season there will be the opportunity to walk the meadow or take a trip on the Raptor Safari tractor and trailor ride.)
3.00pm Adults fly a Harris Hawk (aged 16 or over only)
3.30pm Woodland Hawks and Owls (Woodland arena)
A flying display featuring a team of birds of prey whose natural habitat would be in a woodland setting.
4.30pm Red Kite and Heron feed
Watch wild Red Kites, Buzzards, Kestrels, Herons and a whole range of other birds and wildlife coming into the meadow to feed.

If it helps I live in B'Stoke, if you want can pop by mine and I'll drive the Basinstoke, Hawks, Basingstoke...
8am is a tad early to be getting to B'Stoke but if it beats the traffic I'm normally up by then and the coffee machines not to shabby lol...

Thanks Ryan, I will consider it.
My sister lives in Old Kempshott Lane which I believe is closer to the M3 than Old Basing?
If not, coming with you might be a good idea.
Update..
I've had a chat to my Sister and I might stay over night at her place on the Tuesday.
It'd make live easier that trying to battle the morning rush hour via the north circular / M4 or north circular / M40, M25, M3.
Ryan if I go with this plan, would going down to Andover together work with you?
I don't mind driving there unless you want to?
So Ryan's going to carry the gear and Darran's going to bring the chocolate.

do they have a bald eagel their
do they have a bald eagel their
They have two and fly them in from a few miles away at the end of one of the displays, weather permitting
The weather is looking dodgy for Wednesday and it is predicting rain. :( Do we have a backup plan? I don't really want to sit in rain if it isn't nice.
TheNissanMan

Positive thinking...
It will be sunny :)
If it's raining hard the birds won't really want to do much in the flying displays and the ones in aviaries will probably just sit under shelter somewhere not making for very good photo ops, but I think we should wait and see what it's like on the Wednesday morning, if it's showery spells it's probably still worth going.
Since when do the weathermen predict the right forecase anyway??? If they say rain my money is on sunshine.

It's overcast but not raining here, shorts weather me thinks :D
LOL if you wear shorts it is bound to bring on the rain! ;)

Defo in shorts, will keep the place quiet as it'll scare away most of the people around lol

Now where's Hashcake on a morning, want to pick him up 10 mins early so I can stop on the way for an over sized coffee and a ristretto if I can find a Costa on the motorway :D
Wonderful day - thank you all for the bits of advice and help. :) Now to look through the 700 odd photo's I took to see if I have one or two acceptable ones.

Just in after stopping off at PC World and work on the way home, photo's copying (3 8Gb SD cars ) Now to find out what worked and what didn't...
Great to meet everyone and a superb day out :D
Yep I made it home and pictures onto pc, just need to sort through now.
Cheers all for a cracking day, nice to meet you all, so who's going to start the thread ;)
I haven't found any photos I like yet ;) Most are pretty blurry... clearly hard taking photos of moving birds, or it seems still ones too in my case. Hmm

Another fantastic day. I came home with over 600 photos and have narrowed it down to 21 which I'd like to share, is that too many for a thread??
Nope stick them on there.
But christ you lot are quick, haven't had a chance to look at mine to closely yet
I couldn't find Ryan's thread, so I've started one here:
**edit - link removed, now found Ryan's thread so added pics there as agreed.
Ryan's thread was in the bird section:

Doh!! Why didn't I find it....
I've moved my pics onto Ryan's thread.... sorry for any confusion.
Okay I've stuck up 4 of mine... not sure I have many more I particularly like! Not done much more than a convert from RAW and a crop so if anyone has any tips then gratefully received... :)

Nice to met some new faces and the usual suspects.
Kev I can see you becoming a regular :)
Ryan, Helena and Gordon, great to meet you and Gordon, I enjoyed us showing each other our missed shots :)
Thanks again for the ride Ryan, next time I pop down to my sisters I'll give you shout, a couple of beers heading your way.
As Ryan stated above, the lighting was poor and for me ramping up the ISO just gave me far too many soft shots.
I'm going to head back there in August providing the light is better.

Lovely too meet you all, it was fun. The light was a little challenging, but at least it did not rain!
I'll post a couple of pictures on the thread when I get a minute to process them.
Hope to catch you at a meet some time soon.....
Am I the only one that actually found the light ok, fairly bright but not sunny
Ok it made the woodlands difficult but for the resy at least you don't get endless blown highlights and siloheuttes

It was probably easier with a 2.8 lens but better light would have helped.
Ingrid lets see some of your photos, I'd like to see how well you did.
Still ploughing through them at the moment Darran, been a bit busy over the last couple of days so will hopefully get some up later tonight

Well M8 you couldn't probably attend another meet because you'll be on holiday or too busy eating cake!!
I'd be up for another one.

What a nice young lady Nicky is for suggesting another meet at the Hawk place!

Still up for a trip if it's a weekend. Saturdays even better, and if you can time it when my bike riding buddies aren't off on a trip that would be perfect :D
