I got mine, and tried putting on some L lenses 'cos I heard that they're the best money can buy - and NONE of them would fit! The cheek! Absolute rubbish!

According to 'some' it's a 'fact' that filters cause cancer, premature ejaculation and the Reichstag Fire...

Never mind that your Canon's sensor is made of Ever-Ready torch LEDs and green string, never mind your L-lens is made of recycled plastic milk bottles...nahhh filters did it...they made your images crap...couldn't be the kit, couldn't be the photographer...God forbid...

I've been really polite about them for 12 months and I'm feeling withdrawal symptoms...

I kept saying 'may' 'possibly' 'some might find' etc

Tis a fact that this man speaks the truth. Its just difficult for him being a typical englishman and being super polite ALL of the time.
But having spent so much time in Germany, he is bound to occassionaly have an outburst of honesty.
Try not to take it heart and learn from his honesty. :D

As a side issue I was down at my local lake yesterday and a fellow photographer (a professional no less) was discussing the fact that he regularly used ISO 10,000 on his canon 450D and that in his opinion I had wasted my money on a D3 as Nikon were crap LOL, suffice to say I bid him the best of luck. He did give me his business card and I have considered posting the link but suffice to say his pictures were....................... well let say CRAP:D It is good that we can all have a bit of banter without falling out and I suspect we all come across numpys like the one I described, after all it's the pictures that count

Not sure as I've not owned a D3x but looking at the stats and pictures it is probably a stop or two behind the D3 and better than the Mk 1V.

If you only want a 12MP image and so don't mind downsampling the D3x image it's actually just as good. :)

It's rubbish at anything over 600iso, frankly...same as a D2x, more or less
That's why I have a D3 for 'routine' work...

But as long as you know that, it's fine - it does exactly what it was designed to do...
The D3x is a studio or fine-art tool, whereas the D3/D3s is a general-purpose camera - the D3 does everything well apart from really huge enlargements - and I can still get an A1 poster out of the D3 with no artefacts at all...

The D3x is my 'Hasselblad'...

Nearly...each one is roughly equivalent to a 120Mb CF card in terms of storage...and can only be written to once...lol

I know a guy who only has one hand - he just changed his subject matter - concentrated on studio portraiture work instead - uses a cable-release for everything...
I think his 'hook' has now been modified to operate a shutter-button though...

not as bad as that, got 2 arms, just the right one suffers a lot of pain and weight of a dSLR aggravates it.

The caveat to that is that you can effectively enlarge a D3x image by a greater amount before that noise becomes noticable though... so when I say it's about the same as a D2x you have to take that into account - images at comparable iso-settings are still about 80% better on the D3x over the D2x...

But I wasn't impressed by the low-noise capability overly much...
I do love it at anything under 400iso though...

And yes...apparently D3s bodies will be back on the retailers shelves this week...

Cheers for that the D3s bit was a little tongue in cheek, I cannot see £2000 for a stop or two of ISO performance over the D3 and a few small changes here and there. I am going to wait till the D4 as I suspect it is going to be rather special, just as the D3 was back in 2007

I have a feeling that the D4 may have a new auto focus system amongst other things, just a hunch but they have produced nothing new since the D3, apart from the D3s upgrade. Sure with my type of photography I could use the extra ISO performance but at around 2k ish it is not that important to me:D Also knowing me I'd plumb for the S and then have to change again so even more money.

I love my D3 and do not see myself changing sides as it perfect for what i do.

Now what's my limit on my credit card :)

I think things are going to slow down drastically from now on actually...
The massive leaps in technology have plateau'd, so to speak...I think future models will have some very minor tweaks with regards mechanical advances - the major steps forward will be issued as firmware updates...and you don't need new bodies to do that...
We've got so used to seeing new cameras every two years or so, with sub-model upgrades every 12 or 18 months...
Remember in pre-film days, Canon and Nikon only released new Pro cameras every ten years or so...

I think we'll soon be back to that kind of advance...maybe 5-yearly upgrades...

Arkady

...and whereas in the recent past you could tell the difference between shots taken on a D1, a D1x and a D2x, now you can't...
At the resolutions I work at, I can barely distinguish images taken on my D3 and D3x...colours are the same, rendering is the same.
Only when I pixel-peep can I tell one from another...so for all practical purposes, my D3 is good enough...and will be for the forseeable future...

There was also no appreciable difference betweeen some test shots taken on a D5000 and my D3 a few months back (at the size I usually end up with after P&P).

Buying decisions will now have more to do with the camera's physical and mechanical features, rather than IQ...
