According to a few websites, Whitby is the place to spend Halloween.

Unfortunately, this year it falls on a Wednesday so not everyone will be able to attend. I think it'd be a really good oppertunity to capture the whole feel of the place and the goths will really be out in force.

This thread is for ideas, suggestions and other tidbits of information. Sue and I will probably go up for that entire week and probably stay at the same cottage we stayed at a few weeks ago. Be warned that accommodation will fill up very quickly because I think its the most popular time of year to go.

Glo and I feel fancy dress could be quite fun - on Halloween itself. Would anyone be up for this?

But the Gothic Weekend is Friday 26th and Saturday 27th October. In practice there will be goths in town from Thursday (25th) through at least until Monday (29th).

There were around 3,000 of them in town last October.

Yes, indeedy. Several of the goths I spoke to commented on how quiet the event was this weekend but said they have to book accommodation a year ahead for the October event.

Glo and I feel fancy dress could be quite fun - on Halloween itself. Would anyone be up for this?

Depends on what you mean by "fancy dress". Goths seem to be quite serious about their lifestyle so some *might* take offence if they thought others were treating it as just an opportunity to dress up.

One thing several goths told me: If asked, they are happy to stand and pose for ages but don't like not being asked, ie candid photography doesn't go down too well. I'm not sure how widespread this is; it might be the personal views of those I spoke to but it could also be a common feeling. One guy told me if he sees someone trying to sneak a shot he turns away from them.

ETA: Yes, my partner and I will definitely be there again this October.

3,000 thats a lot.

So its the weekend before halloween then.

I would have thought there would have still been a large presence on halloween itself though?

Yep, and it explains why virtually all the beds in or around the town were taken well in advance. Last year, goths were having to put up in Goathland, Staithes etc and travel in. Also, it tends to coincide with the second weekend of half-term week, which also puts pressure on the available accommodation.

So its the weekend before halloween then.

I would have thought there would have still been a large presence on halloween itself though?

Oh yes, but how many will be actual left-over goths and how many will be local people just dressed up I don't know. Most goths are gainfully employed so will have jobs or universities to go back to.

BTW, I misread what you were suggesting on the dressing-up question. For Hallowe'en I don't think there would be a problem, but dressing-up over the Gothic Weekend *could* be different. The WGW is still run by the gothic community for themselves as a chance to let their hair down (or put it up) rather than as an everyone-join-in-the-fun thing.

Yeah it was a halloween dress up thing, rather than a goth thing.

We stayed about 8 miles out of Whitby in Glaisdale and the week (sat-sat) is still available.

Shame, but now its pointed out, I can see why the fancy dress idea wouldnt be appreciated... never mind.
A weekend sounds better to me, and 3,000 ... Ill be spoilt for choice!
Im not usually very confident in approaching peeps but Im sure Id be ok here as I was in Venice.... the only difference being Id actually understand when these peeps were telling me where to gerroff! ;)

I did notice in Praxis' pics that some peeps looked 'dressed up for the day'.
As far as Im aware no self respecting goth would be seen dead with mousey hair

Hmmm OK I have asked for the week off work and should be there for the week :) I checked a couple of weeks ago and the cottage we stayed in was still free but will have to consider booking it sooner rather than later. Also the question will be where to park with that many people about.

Oh, in that case I *could* tip the local witches off that there's a 'tog along. Sure you wouldn't prefer Whitby?

Hey peoples.
I've been into photography for about 6 months and I just joined this site.
I noticed you were talking about Whitby;
This Halloween (2007) i'm going to Whitby and as I am leaning more towards the gothic kinda style, i'll be taking photos there and i'm sure alot of them wouldn't mind as we would be alike.
If you're going this halloween i'd be interested to know!

This thread is for planning and discussing a trip to WGW or Hallowe'en in Whitby. At least a few of us will be there.
