View Full Version : Cheap(ish) tripod
I am after a relativly cheap tripod to play a round with. I am looking to spend about £50-£70. People have suggested the Velbon Ultra Luxi F but it seems to be out of stock in a lot of the cheaper sites (and jessops) which leads me to assume it is discontinued.:(
Any other suggestions on tripods?
Thanks:)

I have a velbon (can't remember whether it's a Luxi or Maxi though). Good tripod, nice and compact, but not very sturdy when the legs are fully extended. I suppose it all depends what you'll be using it for. Got mine from Morris Photographic as per linky above.
They're sold out too unfortunately. Jessops got back to me and said there was a one month delay in getting any from the supplier, so I assume that is what is causing the problems at the other shops.
Any suggestions on another tripod as I really don't want to spend an entire month waiting for it.:(

My Gitzo is now permanently erected with a large telephoto and a gimbal head. I needed a cheap but good tripod, with the ability of a contortionist, to use for taking macro shots.
I bought this from Ebay - he seems to have loads. It's EXCELLENT, and about half what it cost in the shops.

I've looked at that tripod a few times Doug. It seems pretty damned good. :)

buy cheap....buy twice :(
look for a tripod that doesn't have braced legs tying the legs together, otherwise you'll struggle to get the tripod set up in some of the lower level shots or on uneven ground.
for a few quid more, you can pick up a new manfrotto 190 with an entry level head.
Waslooking at these today and they are cheap but brilliant quality and they ship worldwide I have ordered one.

The cheapie Calumet 1613 (I think - sorry, magazine downstairs and... you know... legs, stairs, my age etc.) which is around 20 squids and should get you going. I think it's a bit weighty mind you.

It is damned good CT.
It's not as good as a Gitzo, it never could be at the price, but in my experience, it's better than anything similar by Manfrotto (certainly at this price point), and it's certainly better than the 055 Pro, both in terms of quality and functionality, though it's not quite as tall, and miles better than the 190 Pro..
It's beautifully made and put together, and it comes with a free (quality) tripod bag, and a set of tools.
I wouldn't consider ANYTHING by Slik/Velbon, or others of that ilk when these are a vailable.

Hmm that was a little more expensive than I wanted really.:( What is the difference between that one and the originally linked one?
If I did go for this though what head would people suggest I get?

Sorry about that.
The original was bookmarked... it was one I bid on, but lost. I should have bid more, because I eventually ended up buying a new one - the first one was second hand.

Thanks for the link - I'm very tempted as i'm looking to get a tripod, can't seemto find anymore from this seller :(
Was there any reason why you didn't go for a manfrotto tripod?
