View Full Version : New computer...Adobe Lightroom or Nikon Capture NX?
Hello all, some time since I last posted on the site, but I'm back lol.
Easy enough question I hope, Ive recently upgraded my computer to Windows Vista. I'm hoping to dust off the old D70 and get back into the game, question is I need some new software. I'm thinking of either Lightroom or Capture NX. Anyone got any comments or suggestions?
Photoshop CS2 whilst there are many deals on at the moment? (With CS3 coming out)?

...I've never been much of a Photoshop user, it's price tag is the one thing keeping it beyond my reach. I might have to investigate these deals though.

Ive hardly touched Nikon Capture NX, but I can assure yo that Adobe Lighroom is very good. I use it to transfer my images, create my folder structure, view my images, edit, crop and tweak them. Also because its an Adobe product, it integrates with Photoshop very closely, so I can jump in and out of the two programs with ease. I also love the Lightroom is totally non destructive, so you can tweak and edit to your hearts content and not need to worry about messing up your origional images. If I was to rate it, I would give it a 9-9.5 out of 10. Its certainly much better than Picasa.(Although Picasa is free, so I can't complain that much)

...thanks Messiah, I think I'm going to save my pennies up and get a copy. I've tried demos of earlier versions of Nikon Capture and wasn't too impressed, but the beta's of Lightroom looked quite good, and they seem to work with Vista...so all in all I think it's £135 well spent! (at least that's how much Amazon are selling it for!)
One thing I've wonderd, is lightroom a replacement for photoshop? as in you can do everything with lightroom that you can do with photoshop? or am I way on the wrong path?

Lightroom allows you to quickly process RAW files and then is fantastic for cataloguing your collections with rapidly applied and searched for keywords. It allows some basic editing such as spot removal, cropping, red eye, rotate. All of these can be be applied across a bunch of photos which is very good for say, removing dust spots from a series of shots. It is non destructive adjustments are saved as such and can be edited afterwards.
It can't do lots of things that PS can do, no layers or masks for example.
If it was me I'd get Lightroom and Elements, which gives you much of the functionality of CS2 at a fraction of the price.

kool :) does elements give you quickmask, layers, selective colour and so on? I'm not 100% on what is offered by each application?
