View Full Version : My Dream.... Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR

So I'm sure last night I had a dream about the Nikon 70-200 2.8 VR lens which I am so desperately planning to buy very soon... Don't worry, it wasn't as geeky a dream as it sounds... ;)

Today then I decided to give it a test as the last time I went to test it, at Calumet, the demo copy had a broken motor drive.. so I didn't get very far. And I just need to say.. I'm in love and that lens WILL be mine. Just need a few people to get deposits in and this investment MUST be made!!! I love it. I will do anything to get it. Almost.

And to justify it I have had offers of work that I could fulfill if I had this darn lens. Catch 22 is definitely the phrase.

Anybody else unfortunately feel this way?!

I rented one for a job from Calumet in Edinburgh and found it was very good indeed. Used it for shooting in an indoor arena and the VR was excellent. Really solid and very fast. Why not rent one for some of your jobs first - then buy it with the dosh you make from them!!

Good call. But I don´t run a credit card any more, matter of principle I´m afraid. So that kinda limits my renting potential :|

Can a debit card not be used to make a deposit? Unless you've gone back to steam-powered cheques :p

I generally thought that rental companies 'reserve' funds on a card (be it debit or credit) and then only charge it on non-return/damage of the rented item

Deposits are usually for the full value of the lens. If he has enough for the deposit he would have enough to buy it. :)

Got one - it's fab - pity Brum's so far away or you could borrow it

Keep the faith, save the pennies and one day...

What sort of 'bank' are you making deposits in? :D :D

I've got my eye on a VR as well at the moment but She Who Must Be Avoided might think otherwise. :shake:

Im dreaming of a 70-200 VR too. It does overlap with my 120-300 2.8 though.

Im also dreaming of a 200 f2 VR....

I felt the same way as you for about a year, saved penny by penny...and then had a bit of good fortune and just new I was going for it, I went through just the same justification as your facing now ... I'm not a big spender on materialistic stuff either, but if I can, and when I do, its quality, ability and longevity that makes my choice.

I have it now... it was the better choice and I'm very happy I went that bit further or possibly over the top with my spending. I consider it a lens that will still be fantastic way into the future.

.. I not had many lenses even near its quality, so all I know is I find it stunning, end to end … all the time, every time.

...which is nice. :D

Calumet do that - They also seem to charge more than the lens is worth sometimes. But the service has been good for me and they always let me try out new toys in-store.

Know exactly how you feel. Both of those would be nice! The hole left in ones' bank account though is not so desireable (sp?).

Got to be around the best lens Nikon has ever produced! Never, ever disappointed whenever I use mine! Just love it!

I used to have one and it was a nice lens.
Sold it when I got rid of the Fuji s2.

I still want the canon variant, but I'll have to wait a little longer.

You dream...of lenses? :cuckoo:

I dream of Kristin Scott-Thomas, which I think is far healthier...

Jas

Arkady - that's because you already have a 70-200 VR

However, Kristin Scott Thomas in The English Patient, with Juliet Binoche too!

My Dad thinks Juliette Binoche (Brioche?) is essence as well - only in Chocolat - in E-P she looks frumpy to me (compared to the sleek, elegant and utterly drool-worthy Kristin...Know how I know Hugh Grant's Gay? Coz he went for the Yank Bird instead of Kristin in "4 Weddings"...)

Seen a couple of 2nd hand ones of this lens for around £800 recently - Would this not be the way to go here? People who buy "Pro" lenses usually look after them better than their own family ... Paul ;)

Yes good call mate, i'm thinking about that. Just waiting on one or two jobs to pay up, ideally want it in my hands before the end of June.. I tried the 80-200 2.8 as a stop gap, but the one I tried was push pull and i didn't fancy it at all, the focus was too slow.

I've used the Nikkor 80-200 2.8 for a couple of years, and I love it, despite the weight. It is great in low light situations and I use it mostly for live music work, or where I can't get that close to the action. However it is quite heavy and have been reading the very good reviews of the new VR version.

One question to those who have used it - I know it's quite fast on the auto-focus mode, but what does it sound like? Is it noisy? As i often have to keep noise to a minimum.

Sorry to bring up and old thread, interested in this lens. Anyone know what I can expect to pay for a brand new one?

Joe T
24-03-2008, 10:42
It's hard to pay less than £1,100 in the UK.

HK imports or Kerso can do em for just under £1k - not really much of a saving.

Around £1100 for a UK copy. Have seen it for £950 if imported from HK.

As said about really. I got mine from kerso last year for around 969, prices have dropped since but I think maybe the uk prices have dropped a lot more as I noticed yesterday onestop digital are doing it for 969 and as far as HK imports go they are usually the most competitive. Kerso will look after you though. Mine was naturally as expected.

I also got one from kerso last year - the best price I could find and from a reputable seller. The lens really is awesome, the subject just jumps out at you and images have real snap to them.

Used it for my first wedding of the year on Sunday and would now definitely not want to be without it. Expensive, but worth it.

I think you can get most stuff in a few days. If you're thinking of purchasing you could even pick it up from his Sister's house in Buckhaven to save on postage costs and get it a bit quicker.
