Welcome to the 2010 Talk|Photography Photographer Of The Year Competition.

The year the themes are going to based on photographic techniques. As with previous years the theme for the month will be posted in a thread similar to this which will be where you can post your ENTRIES only. There will also be a thread for DISCUSSION of the theme. The deadline for entries is the 11:59pm on the last day of the month, shortly after that a POLL will be made for you to vote for you favourite entries that month. This process will then repeat each month with a leader board created at the end of the year. The winner of each month will receive a prize (which will be shown in the ENTRIES thread). The member with the most votes at the end of the year will win the coveted TP POTY Trophy.

So on with the competition;

The theme this month is
'Low Speed Photography'

While maybe not officially a technique in itself, this theme could cover a range of photographs, from light trails to panning to something like fireworks. Basically anything that capture low speed (or whatever your out of the box mind think up).

As this theme covers a wide range of possible ideas a list of examples could take up a LOT of space in this post, so get your googling fingers out and see what you can find to inspire yourself.

As always the theme is just that. It is not a strict rule and you are free to think 'outside the box'.
It is your fellow members that vote and decide what they think is the 'best' photo at the end of the month.

This Months Amazing Prize:

Prize to be confirmed very soon!

Please take a moment to read the Rules and Guidelines. (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=110838) before entering, also paying close attention to the following :

* Please note that any photos submitted must not be, or have been, shown on these forums before. Similar shots are OK, but if a submission is *too* similar to a previous shot shown on the forum, then we may disqualify it (Staff discretion is final).
* To disqualify an image, we simply edit the post, removing the image in question, replacing it with a Staff message. To replace your entry, you may edit the post again, putting your new image in, and removing the staff message. This must be done by the closing date. All disqualified images that haven't been sorted by the closing date will be left out of the vote and marked VOID in the poll.
* If anyone wishes to bring one of the images to the attention of the staff for this or whatever reason, then please use the RTM button under the post in question (It looks like this http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/images/custom_blue/buttons/report.gif).

I've put something in... not sure it counts as slow speed... although it's a very slow speed pan to maintain a sharp image over 20 minutes...

Might have to give this one a miss. Not enough time this month to get out and take one and haven't got anything already taken :(

Good luck to all though

You'll know if people like it by the amount of votes you get:lol:

Not necessarily - I reckon that people were voting tactically for mine last month because they wanted someone they disliked to stay out of the top 5.

Well - that's the only reason why I can think anyone voted for mine anyway

(only kidding - all votes were gratefuly recieved, most appreciated, and the result was celebrated thoroughly - I never, repeat NEVER expected to sneak into the top 5 on any competition on here, and I'm feeling like i'd better quit while I'm ahead to be honest, as it's got to be all downhill from here!)

I must say, having flicked through the entries at the moment, and I am impressed with how creative a bunch we are, a very very varied selection of shots, subjects and techniques.

Yep - some good shots - though I thought it was a slightly poor turnout. Still, congratulations to all who did manage to enter...

Anyone know what June's subject is yet? :naughty:

Not as yet, no, which is a bonus for me, as I can still revell in the fact that people liked my April shot, and not be depressed at May's relative showing

(hey - I was amazed at Aprils results - never expected to trouble the top 10 on anything in this comp. so I'm fully braced that May could be less well recieved :) - Boy, do I wish I had more confidence in my shots... I only ever post pictures I like on here, but when I see what others post, well - i've drafted lots of "gear for sale" notices, put it that way...)

Not yet - which is a shame, especially if it's something that I can do outdoors, as I've a couple of clear days workwise, and a half decent weather forecast showing:shrug:. Looks like I'll just have to go shoot for myself instead

Prehaps we could have the list of subject for the rest of the year.

TheBigYin
02-06-2010, 22:38
I can see pro's and cons to that to be honest Karl...

Personally, I find myself unwilling to post anything decent that I take to the photo-sharing forums, because it'll automatically exempt it from the competition. Now - i'm far from a brilliant photographer, and if I'm going to try and compete with some of the experts on here, even on a small scale, I need to keep anything that's an good whatsoever up my sleeve, just in case it might fit.

This is particularly the case for example with last December's open topic... every decent shot i'd taken all year had already been posted, and I had to post something grabbed at short notice. At least if I knew the subjects for the year I could file the shots away, AND perhaps more importantly, know that some nice shots i'd taken COULD be shared on here, as they didn't fit any of the subjects for the year. I'm sure that I'm not the only person doing this, and i'm also pretty sure that the photo sharing sections would be richer in content if we weren't.

On the other hand, I can see why you'd want to keep the subjects on the QT... if they were published in January, you'd have nearly a full year to get some of the shots, and especially for the technical nature of some of this years challenges, would mean that it would be impossibly difficult for a "general togger" to score more than the odd point - think what the high speed photography entries from some of our people would have been like if they'd have had a entire year's worth of bursting balloons, flying bullets and dripping water to pick from!

It can't be easy thinking up new ways to torture us every month

It's just a shame that I've lost 1 day of the possible 3 i'll get this month where decent weather and no work to get in the way of taking off shooting yesterday, and today's going the same way rapidly...

I Like the fact of knowing one month at a time.
I'd never done low speed photography before (just moved to dslr) and it meant that this month that was what i focussed on (no pun intended:lol:) Photo entered but not great so thanks to the kind people that have voted!!
Last month I did the same with panoramas and although I didn't get anything i thought worth putting in, i have learnt a lot.
So to sum up, for an inexperienced togger (who gets eves and weekends off:thumbs:) it's a great way to learn.

I think that's what I'm missing - as a full-time carer, I don't get many chances to actually get out for more than a couple of hours a week normally...

Sorry Tom, if we seem to be nagging, it's only an indication of how much this competition actually means to some of us. I for one really appreciate the amount of work that must go on behind the scenes to sort this out for us all. (doing the leaderboard is as good an insight as any tbh!)
