View Full Version : Sigma DG / DC
What's the difference between "DG for digital" and "DC for digital"??
Seems the photography industry is just as fond of these silly acronyms as network technologists
and while I'm here..
APO? EX? ASP?
What does the second number mean in.. "F3.5 - 6.3"??
Ta.
Everthing explained at Sigma's site (sort of!) :)

"F3.5-6.3" means that there isn't a constant maximum aperture across the entire range of the lens - so at the wide end the max ap. is 3.5, gradually reducing to 6.3 at the long end.
DG means coatings on the lens that hel with digital sensors. They can still be used on film no problems.
DC means the image circle is smaller and so will only fit a camera with an APS-C sized sensor - like most DSLRs.
APO - means apochromatic glass - helps chromatic abberation (purple fringing)
EX - higher build quality. Kinda like a 'pro' seal.
Lenses with two apertures quoted mean that at the wide end you have one maximum aperture, and at the long end you have a smaller maximum aperture. This occurs mostly on lower-end zooms.
HTH.

Explains all Sigmas lens designations. :)
The second number is the widest aperture at the long end of a zoom lens's range so f3.5 goes down to f6.3 as you zoom out. (means it lets less light in)
Bah, beaten to the punch! :)
