Are the contacts on the camera body dirty?

That was the first thing I checked on the lens itself and on both bodies - clean as a whistle. The cameras do tryto AF but seem to decide that a clearly OOF image is in focus - but only with this lens? Yet it works 100% on every other Nikon body I've tried!!

With that lens use only centre AF point. This way it works perfectly on my Canon bodies.

I've tried every AF configuration - including the centre point - and against high/low contrast targets - nothing works!
