Event Programme PDF (http://east-lancs-rly.co.uk/pdf/War_Weekend_Website_Event_Programme_2010.pdf)

This event was mentioned on the Blackpool Zoo meet and again at the macro meet last weekend. It's short notice but a few of us wondered if there's any interest in meeting up. It looks like events are split across towns along the railway line: Bury, Ramsbottom, Irwell Vale and Rawtenstall.

I'll be going on Sunday 30 May to Irwell Vale to take a look at the military camp and vehicles. Anyone else interested?

I'm sure I'll be there again along with 90% of NW toggers.

I hope Irwell Valley is OK this year, 2008 it was great but last year there really was very little camp there at all. The 40's wedding was good last year too, but it was totally packed around the church.

Thinking of just parking at one station and get a train ticket up and down the line this year instead of driving station to station

Yeah I thought the same about using the train. It would be a shame if the camp isn't great, that was my main interest in going.

OK. I'll be there.

I can't place you from the macro meet, but assuming we'll both be carrying cameras we should identify each other.

:lol: You'll find it easier to spot a guy WITHOUT a camera. It can be wall to wall togs here.

Bugger, I am going to be there on the Saturday and maybe the Monday, but not the Sunday.

It is a great event though, some great people shots to be had while they were setting up for the parade (which I cant see mentioned this year).

Mine from last year - http://www.flickr.com/photos/tom_holmes/sets/72157618701165663/ - in case it helps tempt anyone else to go :)

I think we went to Irwell Vale first, as they had a short procession around the village to the church. Then had a big gun battle on the station there. Then we headed to Ramsbottom, I think, where we spent the rest of the afternoon people watching. Both seemed great locations, but looking at the slightly hard to understand programme (http://east-lancs-rly.co.uk/pdf/War_Weekend_Website_Event_Programme_2010.pdf) for this year it seems not much is happening in Irwell Vale apart from the camp...so not sure I will spend to long there.

I must admit I couldn't decipher the programme...maybe careless talk costs lives. I was hoping the camp at Irwell Vale would be worth seeing.

I gave up trying to work out the programme. I just hoped someone else would have some idea about what is going on.

haha glad I am not the only one struggling with it then. I must admit I didnt look at the camp last year. Got there just as everyone was lining up for the procession, and then after a few shots we happened to wander over to the station just as the 'battle' was starting, it was all pretty much by fluke I think. Not sure we were following the programme.

nah, you might get a better reaction from the people in costume if you were though :) I was tempted to find something and go in a 1940s paparazi style, with the card in the hat saying 'Press' etc, but I never got my arse in gear.

ohh, thanks for the reminder.. not a great weather forecast for the weekend... blah! :(

good idea not to park in bury as its chocka and limited spaces around the station for pay and displays.. the battle re-enactment is usually on the monday at rawtenstall.. ramsbottom always has plenty going on, 40's singers etc

Only just got in from an evening in Birmingham, still aiming to come tomorrow, but may miss the 10am meeting spot. If someone who is going, and sees this before they go, can drop me a mobile number by PM I will give you a bell when I drag my ass over there and see where you all are :)

Shame you can't come Rick

You can usually see it from anywhere on the line, last year it flew over Bury and then followed the tracks up to Rawtenstall via Ramsbottom. It was a little overcast so not great for pictures where we were standing but it was quite a sight.

Well that was a wasted journey. Got there at 9.45 in time to see the chuffer go up the line. Waited till 10.15 for it to come back. Nearly got on it, but was told that whatever had been scheduled in Bury had been moved to Rawtenstall/Haslingden/Ramsbottom, no one was quite sure which. Also didn't want to abandon anyone, more fool me. Train pulled out in a cloud of steam and smoke - perfect subject - leaving just me on the platform, all alone.

Never saw a leather hat, and only cameras were compacts in the hands of the psuedo Maquis.

A three hour round trip for didly squat.

Apologies. My Land Rover broke down just after I'd set off, the clutch master cylinder has gone. I got it home then set off again in the other car arriving at around 10:20. At 12ish I drove down into Ramsbottom and met Kath and Tom.

If anyone was looking for the Dakota you didn't miss it it never made the appearance, not sure why, it was good to meet Richard (OneTen) and Mark (Whiteflyer) in Ramsbottom earlier...hope you all got some good shots.

Just downloading my photos now, was good to meet Richard and see Mark again, shame I missed you Digikat and mickledore. I manage to sleep through my alarm and not wake until about 11:30, but got into Ramsbottom just in time for the parade, and then spent most of the day stalking people on Ramsbottom station :) Glad the weather stayed nice, hopefully got a few 'keepers' from my 500 odd shots.
