View Full Version : Bushy Park - July - done - Next meet?

As mentioned on the London meet yesterday, we are planning a meet at Bushy park in July.
http://www.royalparks.org.uk/parks/bushy_park/
You can get quite close to the fallow deer for good photos.
There are also various water birds, Cranes and other birds as well.
I've not visited the woods or the or the water garden but I have been told they are well worth visiting.
Right then, the date is Saturday July 3rd
The list so far..
Is 10AM too early for everyone?
There is large snack bar in the car park so I suggest we all meet there?
Have a look at the map and see if there is anything in particular you want to do.
Otherwise I suggest the main grounds for wildlife then the water garden and woods.

July 12/13th is Monday/Tuesday Darran so I assume you mean 10/11th. ;)
As I said yesterday, the only date I can make is the 17th so I'll put my marker down there.

You are working every weekend in July?
Well I am on 17th! As I usually say don't worry about trying to organise meets around when I can make it.
I just might try and get to this, but the only Saturday I have in July is the 3rd, most Sundays at the moment except the 11th, off to WHF

One thing to add is Hampton Court Flower Show is on from 6th to 11th July so traffic would be very heavy in the area during those days as well as build up to show.
I just might try and get to this, but the only Saturday I have in July is the 2nd, most Sundays at the moment except the 11th, off to WHF
Are you using the same calendar as Darran? 2d July is a Friday.
Actually, Saturday 3rd is doable for me as well so if that's better for others....

Right then, provisionally the date is the 3rd.
This is so that Gremlin can attend, it's a date that Clive can do and we don't want o upset the KoG do we!

I should really join as I live in Teddington within walking distance of the park and have a few of the deer and the herons / waterbirds in my Flickr.
There is a new posh cafe just opened by the gardens that might be a nicer meeting point. Its called the Pheasantry Welcome center and has its own car park and can be found on the map here:- ) (opens at 9am)
bushy park site (http://www.royalparks.org.uk/parks/bushy_park/)
Hopefully see you there.
Hopefully I will be able to get there by 10am. I have personal training that morning that finishes at 9am and won't have the car so will have to get the train to Hampton. Unless anyone will be coming through Raynes Park!!! ;)

Teddington station is closer to the meeting point I think...
I will see if I can get there. I don't really know the trains going outwards from Raynes Park! :)
Edit: I think I meant Hampton Court station. I will wait to see where we decide to meet!

Where are you coming from?
If you're in Hampshire, would it not be better to pick up the M3?
I could do the M3, but I live on th A3 in Bordon.
A word of warning.....
Every Saturday morning they have a 5k run in bushy Park that attracts up to 600 runners. The run usually finishes at around 9:45 but the car park is absolute chaos after. You should all park in the Pheasantry Centre car park to make sure you actually get a space.
I sometimes do the photos for the run, if I'm not working next Saturday I may pop down.
Edit: Just realised this is tomorrow, and I am working! Doh!
Or, just meet an hour later.....????
mmmm, more sleep :)
I don't mind what time we meet. I am using public transport so the run won't affect me.

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Bordon&daddr=Hampton,+Middlesex+TW12+2EJ,+UK&hl=en&geocode=FbnuCwMdQ9fy_ylhqt90STB0SDHMotewfa-WZA%3BFQt_EAMdiYX6_ynR2czcRgt2SDEM4wlIUvxchA&mra=ls&sll=51.412747,-0.359031&sspn=0.029068,0.08935&g=TW12+2EJ&ie=UTF8&z=10
It looks dead even, might try the M3 for a change.
I have another question though, when I zoom right in on google maps, it tells me that Chestnut Avenue is one way and not the way I'd like it to be. Is this right? Can you get to the meeting carpark via the A308 Hampton Court Road? or do I need to stay on the M3 for another junction?

I pick up the A308 and enter park on the left.
Chestnut Avenue is two way traffic but I am not sure if you can enter / exit it at the other end.
Good god woman, a 2K lens, is a techie but no Sat Nav?
I don't have a Sat Nav for exactly this reason, they give wrong/conflicting information.
Google Maps clearly marks Chestnut Avenue as being one way, so you can only leave the park and exit onto the A308. Too many times I've borrowed people's Sat Nav's and been led down dead end roads or one way streets. They probably have got better over the years, but my map has never been wrong yet.
Thanks for clarifying.
edit - just checked Google Street View and I can see it is a two way street.
I was going to print off a route at work today, but does anyone have a post code for the park? I can't find one.
Also, where is the car park we're meeting in on the map? I tried to find the snack bar as mentioned in the first post, but when I look for that on the map there are 3 snack places. Which one are we meeting?
Here you are Lester, quoted from one of Darran's earlier posts:
http://www.royalparks.org.uk/parks/bushy_park/
To the right of the Diana statute there is a coffee cup, that's were the car park is.

Just past the marker on the left is the entrance and the car park is marked on the map, it's the one to the right of the Dianna Fountain!
Welll I'm coming up the A3 with a sat nav, so see you all a week saturday :D
Darran, there are 2 carparks marked on your latest link.....
One is just past the marker on the main road, i.e. the green road.
Whereas the carpark I thought we were meeting at is inside the park shown between the Diana Fountain and the boating Lake.
Bet you're glad you arranged this now aren't you.....

There are actually three marked but one isn't in Bushy Park and the other one isn't to the right of the Dianna Fountain :p
Just in case anyone is still confused.
I will parking here and waiting at the snack bar getting a caffeine fix.

Without sounding too morbid (:nuts:) - we chatted briefly about a trip to Highgate Cemetery?
Sorry Veevs, I totally forgot about it.
http://www.highgate-cemetery.org/index.php/tours
I think the West Cemetery is the one we are interested in doing.
The only problem is that it seems like one can only book for a maximum of four people.
They also do a special tour for 10 people @ £140 and more can be added at £14 per person.
Special tours are only done on weekdays and light evenings.
Parking in Highgate can be quite difficult but if anyone wanted to catch the tube to North Finchley, I have room in the car for three.
I also know of another old cemetery where there is a nice abandoned church.
Parking there is about £4 for 2 hours but it is free at weekends.
http://www.abney-park.org.uk/AbneyParkMarch10/Home.html
There are other places locally if anyone wanted to make a day of it.
The view from Parliament hill on Hampstead heath is quite good and various birds can be see there.
There are plenty of pubs around and if Hampstead heath was included, we could park up and meet near Kenwood house the then walk onto the heath.
For lunch we could go to the Spaniard which is a very nice pub and it's favourite for playing host to Dick Turpin.
Anyway, if anyone wants to this let me know and I can start a new thread.
Too be honest I don't want to arrange a huge meet for Highgate cemetery, I think a maximum of 10 would be enough.
I would probably be up for the New Forest show as long as we go on the Wednesday as that is my day off.
I would love to go to a Balloon Festival, but a few of us are going to Barnes WWT on the 15th, so it would have to be the 14th. There is a meet at Bath on the 14th which I have put my name down for, but I'm not sure that I want to do two meets on the same weekend, so I might pull out of the Bath one anyway.
Isn't there a Balloon Festivals at Basingstoke sometimes?
I don't know anything about the cemetry, what's the appeal? is there anything special there?
Also take into consideration Kew gardens (£13 entry, but I have some free passes) and a boat trip that starts near Kew Bridge down to Hampton Court (£18 ) and you can smoke outside as well as a meal and drinks tea, coffee and alcohol and more importantly CAKE DARRAN!

I forgot about Kew gardens, that would also be a good idea and the boat trip sounds nice.
Seems like we might have a few good ideas to follow up.

I don't know anything about the cemetry, what's the appeal? is there anything special there?
Old gravestones and mausoleums I believe.
I've never been but I've heard that it's a good place for photography.
abney is the one I was thinking of
Highgate cemetery has real potential with wild undergrowth, headstones and A Gothic feel to it. I went 4 years ago and it was excellent. Rob
Maybe the cemeterys then, although they probably would also make a good venue in winter. Whereas the airshows, balloon shows, county fairs etc are only on during the summer. Having said that I'm not sure I want to pay £14 to look round a cemetry on top of fuel costs...
I think the picturesque villages should wait until next spring around May time, as I noticed this morning all the grass is yellowy brown from lack of rain and these places look best when lush and green and full of flowers.

From what I have been told, Highgate cemetery is worth it.
However, we could just do Abney and throw in a few places like Hampstead heath etc.
I know quite a few places but I can't guarantee and wildlife.
Or perhaps if only a couple of people are interested in doing Abney, we could arrange a small meet?
WOW lots of great suggestions!

What about Portsmouth? I want to do the Spinnaker Tower sometime!
Stick you name down for the Scott Kelby photo walk on 24th july. Not usre if there are any spaces left but I think a few from here are going (we could maybe have a little breakaway group or something)
There are also the old ships at Portsmouth too, plus of course the seaside.

Unfortunately I'm working on the 24th July!
Portsmouth would also offer the chance of going across to the Isle of Wight!

What being able to photograph for miles is not exciting?!!
Plus there is the glass floor, it's worth the trip just to people watch at the top. There is always one who's too scared to go across it.
