Depends on the date, but I`m a member and fairly local. Always popping in when I get the opportunity.

I hope you can make it Martin, it would be good to see you again, and hopefully this time I won't have to pretend to be your mum!

As no one has suggested any dates how does Sunday 15th sound?? I just picked it at random but we have to start somewhere.

Great, both added to the list.
It is sounding like I might have to raid the piggy bank or purchase some extra lottery tickets before this meet.

I had a 300mm F4 + 1.4 TC when I went on Tuesday. It wasn't really long enough. I will stick my photos up at some point but there are a lot of heavy crops! I will either hire a 400mm f5.6 (an manually focus with TC) or a sigma ?-500.

Put me down as yes, and I'll probably have the Mrs with me as she loves it there too.

(Now, can I get the 300 f2.8 by then ??)

Put me down as a probable. Nothing else planned for that day at present.

Like mentioned earlier, 300mm + 1.4 TC will be my tools, but from previous trips to WWT, I could do with longer. It serves okay with a bit of cropping but need more.

Do you regulars use a tripod in the hides? I normally take a monopod to avoid annoying some of the camera hating twitchers so much, though a tripod would be difficult to put up in there anyway.

I've added a new list for the maybe/hopefuls.
I don't usually take a tripod (sold my monopod) as I find the birds move too quick so I do better hand holding.

Gremlin
06-06-2010, 08:46
In the hides you can often balance the camera on the front ledge, far easier then a tripod.
If anyone wants to use a monopod for the day I'll bring my much unused one along...................... yes another useless impulse buy

menthel
07-06-2010, 12:37
I just stuck my beanbag on the front ledge and lent my camera on it. To he honest my tripod was not used at all at Barnes.

I would like to give this a go, but I fear I maybe wasting my time with only a Nikon 70-300mm VR. I will keep an eye on this thread and if things change for me lens wise, then I could change my mind.

You'll be absolutely fine with that I'm sure. I only have a 70-200. There are always shots to be had no matter what kit you have. We'll just have to be a little more creative.

Lester, 300mm gets nice pics of the tamer stuff walking around and enough to crop down I would think. I found stuff at Barnes a lot closer to the hides than on my trip to Pulborough Brooks, as an example.

Alright, I'll give this some serious consideration. I'm only going by recent experience when 300mm was no where near enough. Even 500mm was border line with heavy cropping, looking at some others shots.

Join us anyway, there's always something to shot regardless of what lens/gear you have. Besides it would be boring if we all just took the same shots.

I've often found people to be quite willing to let other members have a quick go on their kit..especially that Ingrid (Gremlin) she normally ends up costing people a lot of money after they have tried a lens or accessory off her. ;)

I was very lucky, I had his undivided attention for a full 10 minutes. He was by one of the little duck ponds when we first went through the gates.

And I really want to get a lapwing. Every time I go I never have enough range, so I'll have at least 500mm this time, most probably 600... And a flask of tea for the hide.

I may be able to go as I live 15mins drive away, but will have to persuade one of my parents to drive me! If i can get there, there will be another nikon user :D

I usually try and get there once a week (at the weekends), and can safely say that in the middle of august, it will be very busy. However, having looked back at my shots from almost the same day last year, a lot of my shots were of migrant hawkers in flight, as well as common darters. Generally, a lot of macro. Also common terns flying close to the hide. Also some great-crested and little grebes and lots of frogs.

The hobbies should be about, along with lots of bees, and the usual wildfowl and herons. As far as lapwings are concerned, unless they are on the islands closest to the hides, they will be too far away even for 500mm.

Bring a macro lens if you are into that kind of stuff and if you have one, because there are plenty of dragonflies and damsleflies, bees, and crickets and grasshoppers.

There could be some failed breeders coming back from their breeding grounds in the north such as blackwits, and greenshanks, and green and common sands. The little-ringed plovers will be around, but are small and rarely come close enough for a good shot.

Water voles are always around, but can be difficult to see.....

I hope all that helps :)

Oscar ;)

Oscar ;)

Got a really good deal on a second hand canon 100mm USM. It basically looks new and came with the lens hood as well!

I use lenses for hire. They advertise here. In fact, for this meet I am hiring a sigma 50-500 and I found the canon 300 f4 too short last time, even with 1.4TC attached.

Should be fun! I have a busy one this weekend too. Its my little boys 1st birthday, so despite the fact he hasn't got a clue what is happening there is a party on saturday and the zoo on monday. I think a nice, quiet walk round Barnes will do me good.

We went to the Cafe on our trip to Bushy Park. There is a nice cafe in Barnes, although I suspect its going to be very busy and a couple of nice pubs back on the main road up to Hammersmith Bridge.

I will probably bring a packed lunch as these cafes are often very expensive and very busy, but I'll probably at least buy a coffee or something. We don't all have to do the same thing.

Never found Barnes to be massively busy, though I'm not sure if I've been around school holiday period. Not really the kind of place you take hoards of kids though, but some do (at that age I'd have been bored within 2 minutes of getting there).

Cafe in Barnes isn't overly expensive, and the coffee s of a good standard (I'm fussy about my coffee!).

Just make sure you have water with you as there is nowhere other than the cafe & shop in the entrance to get any.

Steve

EDIT - Where were we actually meeting, was it in the cafe ??

Looks okay on Metcheck too. Sunday is supposed to be the only decent day of the weekend. Anyway it's a wetland place so expect it to be wet :D.

Right, so looks like I'm on for Sunday also. Hope there are some going who actually know one end of a bird from another. I've been to Barnes before but no idea what to shoot. In general all I ever see are ducks! :D. Though I'll struggle even with my 300mm + 1.4x.

Hopefully no one's been persuaded by the other London meet. Sounds dull. Same old tourist sites I expect. Far better off looking at birds :p

This sounds like fun. Last time I was there didn't have a lot of time to go around properly and explore. It was baking hot so I packed up within a couple of hours :).

But might pop in today and meet you people and probably join for a few walks.
Am definitely coming to the wetland centre around 11ish but lugging kids around to let them enjoy and run wild, but in between that I might be able to sneak in couple of hours to join you while mum entertains the kids :)

So what lenses do you usually carry for this type of walks?
