As it says on the tin really.
I've just really discovered Wordpress, yes I've always known about it, just never taken enough time to look at it properly.
I had always used Joomla because it's what I knew.
Technically Joomla has much more to offer, whereas Wordpress has the ease of use.
But which do you use? And what gallery plugin have you found the best?
Feel free to post links to your site :)
I'm just re-working mine at the moment..so it's a bit of a mess.
I was initially using Wordpress with Gallery2 + WPG2 plugin which worked quite nicely, albeit took a fair bit of template fiddling to get integrated nicely.
Then I decided I wanted more of a photoblog site so I bought ProPhoto a couple months ago which I am only just now getting round to sorting all out properly. It's a lovely piece of software though, definitely worth coughing up for if you want a nice blog imo :)

Tried Joomla and was a bit overwhelmed...
Wordpress i found easier because it starts with nothing and you just add what you want.
That said i may have just go Joomla wrong from the start..!

All word press here and the NEXTGEN plug in for my galleries
I have photocart installed as well for client images as a sale solution

Yeah I really can't be bothered with integrating Gallery2 with either platform.
It seems to be a massive gap in the industry. So many photographers are looking for an open source way to sell images, and no one seems to be making one?
I looked at prophoto but wahey!!! pricey!

With Joomla you need to strip out the articles, extra menus, categories / sections and start with a clean looking site.

pricey but does everything I want and is far better then most of the solutions out there - and although its is expensive its a one off hit as opposed to many of them which charge a monthly fee and commission on sales. When I choose it was actually cheaper then 6 months on one of the popular online solutions

Does it give you the option to bulk upload images and apply a price to them all?
MattyH sent me a link to wordpress but I was unsure what to do with it.

yes via FTP to specified server directories. It'll the process them into the system for you and you can create price lists and apply them on a per gallery or sub gallery basis.
You can also (if you wish) add early bird or bulk discounts
Do you already have webspace Wheels?
Yes, I'm building him a Wordpress site on my server ;)

sorry - I was getting confused between prophoto who make wordpress themes and picturespro who make photocart

Sounds like a great package. But that's twice as expensive than the expensive one haha.

No not yet, the wonderful MattyH is giving me a website, and sorry Matty I thought I had to do something with it but it was way over my head. I did read it how ever :bonk:
I use Pixelpost for my photoblog but thinking of moving to Wordpress when I have chance. I've used Joomla for another website I made and it was way too complicated for its own good ;-)

Some websites require the features and complexity for it to work. But for photographers it seems Wordpress is the way to go. Much easier to install stuff on the fly too.
Now all we need is a good "Jalbum" type gallery featuring paypal selling.
Btw... is there a way to "wrap" a site inside wordpress like you can in joomla?
I had a small go with Wordpress and was impressed as you say on being able to install stuff on the fly! None of this download, ftp, untar etc etc. Not that I mind as its part of my job but 'simples' is nice sometimes..

Turtle skin for Jalbum has a paypal system on it.
I tried it and it looks great but i have not had the time to investigate further.

Joomla really should change to that format, you are basically doing the same but far simpler!

Chameleon does too. but unless you can "Wrap" it in your site it looks carp.

I use a combination of wordpress and pixelpost, both fairly easy to customise with a little knowledge of html, css etc.

I have a stand alone website and two different pages on Wordpress and have links to the others on each. I am also on Myspace etc..
I put small pics onto Photobucket and link to them for wordpress etc using HTML.

Sounds great but I'd rather keep my visitors on one site
^^ I agree, navigating between sites isn't the best way to keep clients on your site :)

I have a techie friend..say it would be easy to design a component for Wordpress or Joomla, will have to push him, he would only have to charge a tiny amount to make a small fortune.
another one for wordpress + NEXTGen gallery

I use pixelpost for my blog and joomla for my site. The main thing I love about Joomla is the 'wrapper' feature, where I can just have my blog appear as a page of my site with a few clicks of the mouse....also useful for galleries, as I just export them from Lightroom and add them to a menu in joomla and job done they appear as a new page.

This is whats bugging me about Wordpress, no "wrapper" :(
If there are no decent gallery plugins then a wrapper is a must.

plus various other plugins on top of that

Yeah, should be able to. I personally don't but after a quick search on their forums there appears to be a couple of addons (one for paypal etc - http://www.pixelpost.org/extend/addons/buy-with-paypal/). Some templates might have that feature built in, not sure.
The particular template im using (Darkmatter - free version) is not allowed for use on commercial sites though. They do a Pro version which you have to pay for, which can be used for commercial sites.

Wordpress is a blog
Joomla is a CMS
No point in using Joomla as a blog, it is a heavyweight, and unless you need the extra functionality
My current wedding photography site is a hand coded static site

With, it has to be said, some fairly odd navigation design decisions.
I'm running a custom wordpress theme on my site, combined with a bunch of jQuery and a few other bits and bobs. Wordpress v3 is going to be a lot more like a CMS than a blogging platform. Which is nice. Still prefer it over Joomla which is like fighting a war of attrition.

wordpress can be used as a CMS, and Joomla can be stripped out to be a verysimple blog, so both can be used, these things are not black and white. most folk will find wordpress to be easiest, while some will prefer joomla.

Yep, and wordpress can be stripped out to have a static site front end feel

yes, thats handy if you want to make a clean front page, Joomla can do that too but the wordpress way is easier. I tried making a product directory with wordpress, that didnt work so well though

Joomla for me. I wanted something I could push business cards to that was more professional than my photo store on Pbase. it works ok running as a copy on my local pc so I can develop though took a bit of a learning curve. Hardest bit for me was how I wanted it to look. The technical bits came easier :D

Another one using Wordpress.
I was using Zenphoto for my gallery but it wasn't looking very integrated with my WP front pages. So I've moved to WP + Nextgen Gallery.

I develop sites with joomla, I picked it after a long evaluation; generally I put in a set of add-ons including a commercial template. I've found it very easy to maintain sites once I've built them, and usually the client can do that without my help. I've not done a photo gallery with Joomla. Overall I found it more flexible than Wordpress for the type of site I produce.
I use Drupal (http://drupal.org).

I'm working on a Joomla site too and I'm paying someone to help a lot with the design and layout side of it.
I think it looks like something more solid than a typical blog type page and something (one day) I will be happy to send paying clients to.
So many add'ons and plug ins it's hard to know where to start.

ive always used wordpress. i originally used joomla but i found it too much of a faff on...
if you know HTML and CSS and basic PHP you should be able to edit wordpress to do what you want to do... its a clean code... joomla is too much i think.
if i had more time i would probs use joomla but since i dont have the time fanny around with it ill just stick with wordpress.

For a start, customising the menu takes a bit of faffing about, you cant hide certain things. In Joomla teh menus are a piece of wee
