Got given a Ixus 750 as a gift, wife wants me to sell this and really want a 850IS after talking to the people in Jessops, is the 850Is really that much better ?

Jessops advice varies wildly according to who you speak to!

I'd spend some time looking round review sites to check the features yourself. Image stabiliser is good but if you are going to pay out extra for it then you might as well go for something with a bit more OPTICAL zoom than 3.8x. always ignore the digital zoom figures for any camera.

I'm still trying to work out what compact camera to get for my wife - 'good' zoom and must work very well in low light! Olympus 780 sounds Ok but there are no reviews. Sorry rambling.... :)

No worries, thanks for advise and rambling is good for you :)

Anyone used either of these (750 / 850IS) ?

Not got the 750, but have used the 800 and 850IS.

The 800 and 850 are about on par with regards to image quality.

The IS can be useful (esp. if you want non-flash pictures).

I can't remember off hand if the optical lengths are the same ranges.

all in all I'd say this is dependant on what you are likely to use the camera for.

If you only need it for holiday snaps or in daytime conditions then there isn't much of a point going to the 850IS, however if you're likely to want low light non flash pictures then the 850IS is probably worth getting.

Overall though I'd say try using the 750 (if it's already open), if you're happy with it don't spend more money for the sake of it.

Thanks... appreciate the comments, the 750 is not opened..

Original idea was to sell this and get the 850IS. Will do some more reading and decide what I wanna do..

Thanks.

Seems the 850IS can't be a very popular camera, as no one seems to want to recommend it over the 750.

Think it is more the case that unless you have spent time researching which compact camera to buy you don't have an opinion! There are just too many models out there.

Review sites and maybe dedicated hardware forums might be your best source of info. steves digicams has a hardware forum (though even there replies are scarce).
