View Full Version : Last shot of the evening...UPDATED
Took the old camera out on the cliffs this evening, almost nothing worth keeping except the last shot, taken long after the sun had disappeared.

 Wow.
You say long after the sun had gone? How long was the exposure?
Cracking stuff!

The horizon isnt straight. There is also too much black. Have you ever tried painting light? If you had a 5 million candle strenght light to paint the cliffs with it would of had more impact. That or slow sync flash to illuminate the foreground.

A little dark in the edges as is pointed out but I really like this type of shot so will forgive that. Lovely!

:agree: Nice colours and composition, just a little too dark (for me!)
Lovely colours, but a crop on the left to get rid of some of the black would probably help. :)
How do you decide how long to make the long exposure? Trial and error?

:agree: Would look great
Maybe put the cliff-face on a 'third'?
You lot are never satisfied
The 2 min exposure using bulb mode was pretty much just a guess - I would have tried a few others but I was cold, wet, tired and in need of alcohol by that point :p
The processing was done post-alcohol, which may explain the wonky horizon! - which I'm sure I'd fixed by the way
Sync flash is something I really should get to grips with. I did try bringing out more of the foreground but had to really push the exposure and couldn't be bothered trying to sort out the noise issues. Have a few more from the same spot I may try and salvage.
I deliberately left in a lot of black to offset the colours - something I tend to do a lot and always get told to crop it off, lol.

For long exposures you should initially turn your ISO to the maximum and use the widest possible aperture so that you can meter the scene and do some quick test shots. Then when you know what exposure you want you can work out the shutter speed you need by adding a stop for every one you remove by reducing the ISO and shutting down the aperture.
A big benefit of digital and saves potentially wasting a couple of minutes in the cold waiting on something that might not work.

Some really nice colours there. It is a great shot but I think the problem with so much black is that it laves you feeling everything is in the top right hand corner. The black shape of the cliff against the sky works really well, as does the dark foreground, but the left quarter of the image feels wasted. That is just me though.
Michael.
OK, have tried my darnest to bring out the foreground, it took a huge amount of work and I don't think it would survive being printed large, but the result can now be seen at the top of the page.

Have done by best in PS Boru, I'm afraid I don't have that many candles, plus it was windy, they'd never have stayed alight :D
WOW! the edited version in incedible, Love It!!

OOOh! :)
That 2nd shot belongs on a box of chocolates ... gorgeous colours, really lovely!
:) Thanks for the comments guys. If the weather holds I might try a few more in a similar style this evening.
Tom - The scond shot/edit is serious Top Notch !
Yes I feel the edited shot works better. Good job! Must get me one of these filters :)
Edited version definately, but still a touch too much wasted space on the lhs for my own personal taste, I think I would've cropped it 10X8 and cut off some of the dark edges. but it's all subjective I guess ;)
I love the second version :D
