Thanks for that am I right then that the lens are the same in quality and will perform and produce the same photos and that the main difference is the size and weight or have I miss read it

That's about it - the lens is 'L' quality as near as damn it without the size and weight penalty.

According to these websites the IQ isn't actually much better than the standard 70-300mm USM IS.

The second one thinks the non DO is actually the better bet if you aren't too worried about the size.
