View Full Version : Middle Earth 1
Okay it's not but this place reminded me of Lord of the rings for some reason.....
Been very busy the last couple of weeks and not had much chance to get out with the camera.....when I did the weather was very dull but little wind (today is lovely - just the way innit).
Thanks for the comments on my previous post....didn't want to bump while posting another.
With the sky being so crap as seen in the first pic, I decided to go for little to no sky in most of the shots......something i've never really set out to do but didn't have much of an option really.

Ken.
With the exception of the last possibly, they all look over-sharpened to the point that they look almost more like graphics than photos. Despite that I do like them, and if it's the effect you were after it'll do for me. I like the first particularly.
You need more of those twisty gnarly tree roots for the Tolkien effect. :D

I do like these - the cascading falls is a fantastic shot and I very much like the processing. It has an HDR feel on this monitor!
And I agree with CT - just not gnarly enough for Fangorn :D
The other set is equally good imo!
Where in the world were these taken btw?
Have to agree with CT on that one Ken but I really like the 1st, good focal point, tones & composition, very nice shot
Thanks mate...I got some tree root stuff and loads of other shots just waiting to be procesed.
I've been trying some different ways of sharpening for web (which works like magic)....(although i've got some fine tuning still to do :D ). But yes I did intentionally go for that look, although not to the point of being over sharpened.
Thanks again CT.
Ken.
I agree, they do look more like graphics but I also like them a lot.
1 -4 are Hobbiton/like and 5 is more Rivendel (LOTR fan here :D)
I really like the waterfall one, as for the rest I havent seen Lord of the Rings (I always fall asleep when matt puts if on) so cant comment on that side of things.

The first shot is a blend....one for the sky and one for the ground etc and the falls was another 7 shot hdr along with pic2....all others are single shots.

Waskerly just outside of Castleside.....a very secluded but public footpath (although not many people no of it) through a dense wood.
Thanks again guys.

:D I like it!!!! Now all we need is the Brandywine, Bree and Isengard - now that would be a set!!!
That's a good idea for a project...Get pictures of every important place in Middle Earth :D
I love the waterfall picture, and I think the sharpening works quite well. It may be a little overdone on some of them, though.

On first look I thought ..HDR...so interested to hear more about the sharpening technique.
I love the waterfall and the last one of the foxglove/bluebells. (Think I saw an elf whizz by, BTW)!!

I think losing the sky works really well on these. Not a technique I would have thought of in those circumstances, so good call.
From that perspective, I particularly like 3. It's a no sky shot without looking down (shots looking down are a bug bear of mine - it seems to be human nature to take shots from eye level when a more interesting view is to be had).
I also like the angles between the fence and trees in 4. Makes it hard to identify which way is actually vertical.
Wow, these are really nice. Interesting processing and suits it well. Good job
