For a long time now, due to eye problems i've only been able to use my camera on auto. But now after a operation I can see properly, so I can make changes to camera settings while out taking photo's. Please give me your opinions on this shot I took this weekend, useing a 18-200mm sigma DC, aperture priority, on a K10D.
Cheers

Lacklustre to be honest with you.

Having said that; technically it's fine. Nice sky, sharp foreground and good textures. Nice details in the background.

Like I said, however, the artistic merit of the photo doesn't grip me tbh.

Yep... technically fine, but doesn't quite grab me either. :)

It's almost two shots in one - a landscape and that crumbly structure in the foreground - but doesn't really succeed at either. You might have done better to concentrate on looking for a few angles to try taking that foreground structure from and concentrate on the shape and texture of it - it looks like it could be interesting in it's own right?

Don't take offence - it's meant to help. :)

Good on you for getting the eye op john, brave man!
Technically it looks fine to me, I'm no expert though just using my eyes which is what your doing now
The subject is undefined though, you need to make more of the wooden structure, better angle maybe?

Thanks for the input guys, it was the technical side I was interested in. I agree with you about the subject matter not being up your street, it's more of a interest to old blokes like me who worked on the Liverpool Docks 50years ago.

cheers

You'd be interested in some of Petemc's work then, have a search here or go to; http://www.vanilladays.com/about
I would be interested to see more of your photo's of the Docks if you have any?

Thanks for that link Susane it's fantastic. I have follwed Petemc's work, it's a wonder we have not bumped into each other, we seem to prowl the same area.
The hundreds of film and photo's I had of the docks were unfotunately destroyed a few years back.

I kinda like it as a 'record' shot. Something old and something new(er) in the background. It's like a record of decay and growth at the same time.
