View Full Version : Sunrise London City Meet. 17th June.

Jonny and I would like to arrange an early meet...very early, about 4am..ish. Sunday is the better day for quiet empty roads with no people etc.

It will be next month. June, the chosen Sunday is the 17th

In the square mile that is the City of London.
Main line Liverpool street station will be open, all tubes will be closed. Some night buses.
Being a Sunday, car parking is available till about nine .. and many places all day.

What we want is a bright sunny morning with fab clouds and great streams of light passing between the huge old buildings... empty bridges, some litter blowing...etc. :D
It should be possible to set a tripod up in the middle of the road etc.

This is a hard core kinda thing, but all are welcome, be prepared to work your tits off though cos most of us will be doing just that....hopefully.

Breakfast and laters up at Spittlefiels and Brick lane or suchlike would suite me well...it’s an idea anyway.

Form an orderly queue please.

Cheers Adam - just got to this ;)

Only thing to add is that we may have to be fluid on the timing dependent on weather forecasts - not much point unless a sunny /. bright start is expected.

Come on people - sign up, sign up :D

Oh, I would be up for that if you don't mind guys. Though I can only do 10th and 17th, not 24th.

I'm sorely tempted - are you looking for a firm commitment?

I'm sorely tempted - are you looking for a firm commitment?

No firm commitment required Pete, but Adam has been asking for a non-refundable deposit of £250,000. I thought it a bit steep but he managed to convince me it would be worth it :) But seriously, just thinking of meeting places and parking etc so no worries.

LL - course we dont mind, more the merrier.

Can't do 10th, but I like the idea... Biggest problem is that it's impractical for me to get to London town that early on the day - anyone got a sofa?

Sounds like a plan.

Should be able to make most of those days.

After seeing some of the earlier shots from "Town" I have to give this a go.

I would love to come along but it's a bit far. I used to walk around London at this time of a summer morning when I worked night shift at Joes E6 in Wardour St. The photo ops are amazing and you really get a new perspective on the city. Looking forward to seeing the results

OK - so we have:

Forbodden Biker. Jonnyreb, LadyLens, Hoodi, Hypnotic, TangoCharlie, Blinekrz, Bsoltan, Evilowl and SW4Peter that can all do the 17th. Lets go for that date then :)

wyvern971 and Donerboy, our resident soap-dodgers will need a late night out to face even an evens chance of being awake at 0445 and jimmyLemon needs a sleeper carriage.

Cool - anyone else up for the 17th June and where shall we meet up? Trafalgar Square? (decent parking nearby and handy for the M4)

Right, my normal parking spots are up by the BBC [portland st??], Waterloo Bridge or wapping, so if anyone knows the names of car parks or parking streets near traf square, that would be a help, though I am sure I will manage otherwise;)

Oh, and I will be coming in from north bit of M25, near J23/J24 so if anyone needs a lift from that area, just shout. Also, I happen to know of some free secure parking in Kentish town, near camden centre, so if there are any night buses available from that area....I have the keys ;)

Wyvern971
29-05-2007, 12:07
Hmm 17th sounds promising :p

Got a poker night on the 9th which probably won't have finished untill you guys have met up :p

Might be out on the 16th, but hey I was out the night before I went to the last London Meet :D

17th is good for me. If I don't have a new car by then I'll have to travel down the day before and find a place to stay. Or I could just do that anyway...

Once a location is set then I'll have a look around. Trafalgar Square sounds as good a place as any.

Also lots of parking around the home office (marsham street area behind St James Park) which is also metered but free on Sundays. Only a 5 minute walk to Trafalgar Sq from there

It’s a heck of a long walk from Trafalgar square to London City guys ...?

... I go with the flow, But I think we should go for the city It will have the emptiest roads and least people ...I know parking will be the biggest pain. ..we do have the option of re-parking, after shooting sunset.
This could mean we can park most places around the city before 8/9 o’clock especially on a Sunday.

Jonnyreb
30-05-2007, 11:27
lol - fair point. How about we meet there, where there is plentiful parking, and just take two cars (or as many as needed) to the city?

Yv
30-05-2007, 11:34
I am easy, will go with the flow, but I will mention again if we are thinking of that, I can lock cars in our workshop for the duration if we only taking a couple into the city.... though I know it might be out of the way for some people, so just an offer if its needed.

OH, assuming its not sold in the next couple of weeks, I can also use the scenic if we need seating space, 5 proper seats and a big boot. ;)

02-06-2007, 20:55
I guess you could hang around the station! ...safer than most places. ... There’s bound to be somewhere serving breaky etc....plenty to photograph too I would think.:)
...most of the scumbags have done their daily mugging and are tucked up in bed at that time anyway. :D

…You may not be the only TP member hanging about…. JimmyL is pondering the same problem and others too I expect.

Ok so the plan so far.

The actual meet is in the City of London (The square mile that’s the City) …I suggest initially, we meet at the small square on the corner of Leadenhall street and St Mary Axe …the square between the Lloyds building and the gherkin building. …everyone knows what the Gherkin looks like right.

We’re meeting around 4am and not much laters than 4.20 am. I shall be their at 4 o’clock. My mob 07958 484215

Sunrise is at 4.45am

Some members are meeting earlier at Trafalgar square, parking, and then taking fewer cars over to the city to catch sunrise (It’s a couple of miles guys, give yourself time etc).

The rest of us are going for parking in and around the city itself.

Evilowl is going to check parking Monday ish; he works around the Gherkin area. I’m going down to tomorrow just north east of the city to look for NCPs and see what parking signs say what … exactly. I’ll let yous know. :)

Yv
02-06-2007, 21:17
I would agree about the stations. The big ones will probably have something open all night, even if its only a papershop. I was at London Bridge stn at 7am sunday morning a few weeks ago and they were servinf coffee etc, so I imagine Kings cross, Euston, etc, will have something.

If anyone IS coming into Euston, drop me a PM, I will pick you up on way past.

Probably a bit out of the way, but Ranoush Juice on Edgeware rd near marblearch used to be open till about 3am for food and a couple of tables to sit at, but it really is in totally the opposite direction to planned meeting points and not always the nicest of areas at times.

tank
03-06-2007, 03:50
Parking in the City should be fine even on a sunday.

Am I right in thinking this is the square where we're meeting.

Yep, that’s the spot Tank, nice one. .. That piccy is a few years old, I can see the circular foundations for the gherkin going in on the top right. ....The squares a little more fancy now as well.

I went down to the city at sunrise today for a looki, ;) bit foggy this morning, quite light at 4.15, but not much of a sunrise at 4,55, got better around 5am as the fog cleared and the tops of buildings caught rays....some nice light then, and good shooting to be had for an hour or so.
The roads where mainly empty as where the pavements. ...I did manage to get stopped buy our police force, questions, details taken (what are you doing with a big flashy camera at this time in the morning... enjoying myself I said ...Oh, they said....errr. lol ) ...15 minutes wasted whilst the fog dissipated....no prob, just a pain if they want to question all of us on meet day I though.
Because of that stoppage, I now plan to ring the City Police and inform them of our numbers the day before... possibly we should provide all our simple contact details that morning on a sheet; I’ll let you know what they say to that idea too.

Hope all your arrangements are going smoothly guys, not an easy meet at all.

…any more?

I used to work for the City of London by the Guildhall but left about a year ago. Now work in Richmond.

Have just found on the COL page you can list pay and display bays via the interactive map

http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/Corporation/maps/Interactive+City+maps.htm

There looks to be a few spaces around - Creechurch Lane, Bury Street and Mitre Lane are within a 10 second walk

Postcode area is EC3A 5AY

Restrictions

The whole of the City is covered by two Controlled Parking Zones (CPZs) designated the City of London Zone - which covers most of the City, - and the Smithfield Zone - which has special provisions for traders and customers of the Smithfield Market.

The controlled hours for the City of London Zone, during which motorists must pay to park in a permitted bay and must not park on single yellow lines, are 8.30am - 6.30pm Mondays to Fridays and 8.30am - 1.30pm on Saturdays. In some streets regulations also apply on Sundays. Times are indicated by time plate signs in the relevant streets. Double yellow lines indicate that parking is prohibited at any time.

The controlled hours for the Smithfield Zone are 24 hours a day and the regulations that apply to the market trading / loading bays permit goods vehicles only, at any time.

 I do recall in my first months of coming down to london, I was spending half weeks here and other half oop north, and one saturday night, we hit the West End for late night coffee about midnight, armed with my old Fuji P&S. We finally came home about 6am, just after sunrise....and then slept all day sunday. :D

Forbiddenbiker

 ... I've spent many a Sunday asleep myself. :D

I plan is to avoid that this time by power napping in front of the TV on Saturday, fully clothed, everything ready, alarm clocks set to full. I find as long as I get an hour or two my clock resets, if a little reluctantly sometimes ....The increasing light soon makes me feel normal and I can catch up the next night by sleeping heavy....easy. :D :(

Not so easy for many though, I do hope it’s a good morning or I’ll likely be talking to myself for a while.

Everyone ...it was Jonny's idea. :suspect: :D

OK people - I light of the fact that the Falklands memorial jobbie is taking place, I wouldn't be at all surprised to find Pall Mall and vicinity closed for parking. That makes Trafalgar Square a bit of a nightmare to meet at.

I suggest we have a change of plan and all arrange to meet at the same place (City) at 0400- 0430 (just cos its going to take a little while for sun-rays to be visibile between and above the buildings).

Any other thoughts?

Yv
05-06-2007, 09:58
Fine by me. My other half suggests parking near the Barbican should be easy too and no where near a big a trek as over from Traf Square?

Oh, same offer still stands, will be coming in from north, so if anyone needs a taxi, shout.

Forbiddenbiker
05-06-2007, 14:32
Parking. Note: there are no guarantees...it changes weekly nowadays….just trying to help. :D ...well spotted Jimmy..phew.

Red x marks the spot.

There are some streets still on the old parking method I.E. free on Sundays; they are few and far between. Most of them and the better parking is available in the East End that’s the right hand side passed the cyan line. I suggest you look in this area for parking.

I've marked a few car parks that I know off ...I have no idea when they are open.
There are probably another ten or twenty car parks on this small section of map that I've not noticed before.

This map covers the petty coat lane market (not Sundays), the spittlefields market, brick lane market ...so it starts unpacking its goods from about five onwards till the crowds arrive at 8 etc ...be careful you don't park in spaces reserved for stall holders they have priority over most that day.

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/optiflow/sunrisemeetmap.jpg

Much of the parking restrictions don't start until 8am ish. So moving after sunrise is not so daft …hopefully more car parks will be opening then if not earlier.

Ok, slight change of plan for me that may be helpful for someone else. My other half is planning to stay up all night anyway watching the LeMan 24hrs, so I have roped him in to be chauffeur. Will still use the 5 seater scenic, so if anyone wants collecting on route roughly coming in from the north [and prepared to go via anywhere within reason], please let us know. He is going to drop me off in the square where we are meeting and then take car away again and I will get a tube back later when they are actually running so thats one less parking space to find. :D

Hello fellow headcases.

I think we need a contingency plan - the weather is not looking as good as it could be. However, this could result in some awesome lighting.......

I still intend to be there if the wether is anything up to and including light, sporadic drizzle, but if we get monsoon-type downpours i think i could probably better spend my time at home, in bed, asleep........

What do the rest of you guys think?

Nice one Jonny, thanks for your help this morning, top man. :D

...We have our Shooting Licence everyone, up to twenty people in the security area that is the City, ( No names and addresses required) Licensed between 3am and 12am. ....The only condition being; 'FILMING ACTIVITY MUST NOT CAUSE ANY DANGER, OFFENCE OR OBSTRUCTION TO OTHER PEDESTRIANS' .. So no drunken jousting or lancing each other with your tripods please.

… Just call me the location manager …apparently. Lol

We are Tourist btw, that way we didn't need any liability insurance.... doing stills photography and we can use cameras and tripods...which is useful. ;) ..... we didn't actually need a licence..
