A DIGITAL PICTURE OF BRITAIN
Sunday 5 June - Sunday 10 July 2005
As part of A Picture of Britain, Eamonn McCabe and other top photographers chronicle Britain's urban, rural and industrial regions using the latest digital photographic technology.

Agreed. I think from reading the rules you can enter as many times as you want, as long as they are different subjects. Although, there is this annoying rule;
Photographs should not be cropped or altered from the original, nor should panoramic settings be used..

Thats will make you think about your shots more.
Most digital photo comps have the same rulings.
Thats will make you think about your shots more.
Most digital photo comps have the same rulings.
But isn't a bit odd that a "Digital photo comp" rule is that you can't alter your shots, or at least enhance them a little. We all know how photoshop can help warm up our images from the cameras defaults, and given that it is a "digital" comp, seems really silly.
you will still be able to alter the levels, curves and sharpen your image.
The reason they use these rules is so photographers enter it, not graphics designers.
Ah. So RAW editing is ok, as its a feature of the camera, but I wonder where they stand on the use of say an overlay layer. I use these on my shots in place of a real world filter to adjust the sky so its not blown out.
You'll have to do that at the shooting stage I'm afraid.
Any adjustment that adds to the image will be looked on as cheating.
Exposure correction is all that is allowed.
Bah. These people need to get with the times. A lot of my images will be unnaceptable simply because I didn't use a piece of glass to do the same job.
As long as what you do is not 'in your face' I doubt they could tell.
i have submitted an image that has been slightly cropped and the levels boosted....wonder if they will notice?!
Submitted my daff snap (with no border /crop etc) for South East (Hampshire in the SE!) rural do-dah:

Well thats the winner in that section sorted now...we just need to capitalise the others so its an all "photography forum" final
pfftt
I wish!
But I like the server invasion iiea \o>
gah....better than my tractor
Cobblers - your tractor shot is great :)
Given that someone has submitted a photo taken on a Lomo LC-A and actually says in his description, "Taken on 35mm film", I'm just going to submit whatever I like :)

Cheat, mesa gonna tell on you

Meanie :p I'm not going to submit a film shot :) Digital only. I was thinking that the rules are a bit ambigious. The rules don't explicitly say you can't use Photoshop and you could interepret the rule where it mentions cropping as that you can't adjust the dimensions of the shot.
I've been looking at the Shots in Scotland Landscape, there's no way some of them have not been shopped, they're also damned good :(

Ah nuts you've just made me realise I put a picture of Ben Nevis in the North section as thats where I'm from not where the shot was taken. I hope they realise :)
i havent had a reply on my shot yet, the aspect ratio should be ok on it, its 600x433, i cropped a tiny bit and added a border, thats why it a bit funny...will see later if it turns up on the site

Thats the only section that has any photos of any quality, I feel for you mate.
mine isnt up yet, i expect a good email explaing why its been rejected when i get home then

The rules say you can scan an image but I still think that goes against the whole point of this.

It does? <mr burns> Excellent </mr burns> :D Only for one photo. The yellow field with a tree shot I took with my Lomo.
Actually, having a closer look, the rules state that "All photographs must be taken with a digital camera or camera phone. Please retain the original digital file for reference; it may be needed to demonstrate this is your own work.". This is then supported by a large section in "Help with Uploading" which deals with scanning prints (which I saw originally), so I can only assume that the BBC folk think that people are going to take a picture with a phone camera, get it printed and then scan it back into a PC. <Homer> Doh! </Homer> :)

That's what I thought. The Carr Bridge shot looks like it might have been as well. I seem to remember houses on the bank behind there, could be the memory going though.
holy crap!
9 pages last time i looked, 29 now!! they change the order the piccies show everytime too, so you have to look through all of them to find your own...and mine still isnt on!!!

Hehe. Have you noticed that you can see how your shot is doing if you vote for it? 10,10,10,10,10 ;)
lol
i had noticed, its a rubbish system
You can also vote more than once for the same piccy
Ahem, don't suppose anyone would care to rate my effort?
www.bbc.co.uk/apps/ifl/arts/apictureofbritain/showrecord?Id=1568
As part of the vote manipulation service I have of course rated everyone elses at 10 :).
voted..
someone didnt like it, as my rating has gone done, i have also mailed the BBC to point out how rubbish and inadequate the voting system is!

Hehe nice one :) Also voted :)
just gone through the first 5 pages, voted for each picture..some real dross there!!!! Some images in the wrong category too, buildings in Rural anyone??? I think by the time the end of july comes round there will be hundreds of pages!!! should be interesting to see how they voting affects the shortlist
The Voting system isn't going to pick the winner anyway.
So all of this spam voting isn't going to get you anywhere.
A panel of top photographers is going to decide the winner, so it will take something special to get their attention.
Think about what you want to get across to them, send them a message in your picture, something they will be able to identify as being what Britain stands for or has become.
An old phrase springs to mind,'Think outside of the box'.
Good luck.
the most popular pictures will form the shortlist, i think the rating system determines this...
i will see about getting another shot done for it though, something a little different
Just having a look through some more and I sincerely hope that it's Dan Cheung and co that will be judging as they'll be able to spot the large number of manipulated images and shots taken on film cameras.
all i did on mine was a very slight crop, added a border and tweaked the colours, i hope thats allowed!!
got an email back from BBC, they say
We can tell you your rating straight away but the new average rating
does not get updated until sometime later. Although people can rate a
photo several times, only the first vote is counted.
so there you go!
You rated this photo with a score of 10 , the current average is 10.0
Cool :D Probably only from my rating though :)
no i voted for yours pete, didnt give you a full 10 though, only an 8, lol....
Meanie :p

I recognise that photo steep. Slightly different there though, probably due to the crop rule?
I've been looking at the photos of you tarts on the fogbox! A few from OCUK too. There's one (not from a forum I think) of a massive wave crashing against a lighthouse - a great shot - need a good zoom I'd imagine to avoid being swept away.

Nah, different angle, different day, month, year :)
I took that one last November, in fact it was the one that reminded me that the theatre might make a good architecture subject.
how many of us have got on the BBCi now then?
just had another look through, lots of shots in the categories that have nothing to do with whatever they are in!
Have seen a few from here, trouble is everybody using their real names so i getting confoozled ! lol
There are some excellent pics/photos/images in there ! ;)
Still haven't got round to this, must extract digit :(

That's a good shot IMO, but not entirely sure it relates to Scotland :).
