Taking in some long exposures to get some smoky water effects these are regarded as some of the best waterfalls in Yorkshire. As you walk along the 4 mile (8km) circular route you will not only see the ancient base rocks that form the Peak District, but also the many rare plants, birds and trees they support.
Family Ticket 」10.00 2 adults and up to 3 children (under 16 years)
Adult Ticket 」4.50 16 years and over
Child Ticket 」2.00 Under 16 years
After a phone call I find.A BBQ is not allowed anywhere on the Waterfall trail but there is a Picnic area in the town or at Kirkby only some six miles away. No Group discount I'm afraid either :(
I will be chasing up for a few experts on the day and these will be posted as soon as I can find them.
Please Post your interest in the thread and dare I say meet at 9.00am and a BBQ later in the day :)
Post your photo's of the day HERE (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=244688) please.

Hi all
Would just like to add some extra info in here. The waterfalls walk is on paths which are uneven and there are hundreds of steps, many of them are steep and also uneven.
Please make sure strong sturdy footwear with good grips is worn.
My mum twisted her ankle the other night wearing walking trainers on a flat part of the wakl so its easy to slip or trip on a tree root even when wearing good footwear.
I am assuming you will be doing it the correct way round so just to say there is a small hut before you get to Thornton Force which does tea coffee and sells biscuits, chocolate & crisps etc. Also the main cafe on the carpark is pretty good as well. There is quite a nice picnic area just over the river bridges down by the river on the path to the swimming pool.
They don't allow bbq's on the walk due to all the woodland and also becuase the people who ignore this rule leave them there after they have finished and don't take their rubbish home. I was pretty disheartened the other night about having to clone out a disposable bbq that had been left on the big stone at the bottom of Thornton Force.
Remember anything you take with you will have to be carried all the way round and placed in the bins at the end. There is only one bin on the walk other than those at the start due to not being able to get to them to empty them with a vehicle.
To give you an idea, for anyone who went to Kirkby on Sunday think Radical steps for a good 45min of the walk. It took me 2.5 hours to go round the other night. I wasn't rushing but I wasn't going that slowly either and I wasn't stopping for long to take photos as it was too flipping wet and I wasn't carrying a tripod.
I'm sure some of you will have been before but this just gives those who haven't some extra info.
Hope that's ok John. I'm surprised they won't do you a group discount though.
I'll probably make a very last minute decision on whether I'm going on this one or not.
Andrea
Thanks for that extra information Andrea

I think I'm gonna have to seriously consider asking my boss if I can permanently swap my days off at work, I'm going to run out of holidays at this rate!
At the moment it'll have to be a no for me, as I can't ask for so many weekends off in quick succession, but I'll try and sort something out.
Edit: I've just realised that my mate wants me to go to RAF Fairford on the same weekend, so that'll have to take priority if I do get the time off, sorry John!

I'll be kicking my heels that weekend, the other half will be gallivanting in London seeing some show or other so put my name down.
I will add a caveat though - if the weather is anything like Kirby in the afternoon I think I'll give it a miss.
Hopefully it'll rain the day before so the falls are nice and full

I'm going to try for this one, will need to make sure my work rota is not changed between now and then. However if it's at all possible to change the date to the next weekend (25th) I can definate make it. It'll be slap bang in the middle of a 2 week holiday break.
I've already put an audible reminder on the BB so I don't forget the battery. :)

John,
Would love to join you again for this one but I'm in Scotland.
Hope you get better weather this time.
I've been to the falls a number of times and would endorse all that Andrea posted.
Also, for those that like lone trees on limstone pavements, Twistleton offers this. This can be accessed from the top end of the walk. I'm sure Andrea with her local knowledge can give better directions than me.
Hi all
Would just like to add some extra info in here....
Andrea
Andrea, (or anyone local) do you have any idea if the water level on the falls is enough for pics? After the KL meet Ryland and I headed over to Scaleber Force, as we thought with all the rain we had had, the falls would have looked great, but it was just a trickle and no pics where taken! Just a thought.
John, I知 going to have to be a maybe on this one, subject to me earning enough brownie points with the wife and kids. :D
Thanks Ken, yes Andrea mentioned trees on limestone pavements and It's on my to do list. Have a great time in Scotland and look forward to seeing your photo's on your return.

As regards the water levels, I'm in the next vilage and despite a couple of down pours recently (including last sunday!) the river here is still low. However we've got a couple of weeks yet so there's time.

They are not the greatest and it took me ages to find some as I guess you don't normally include the paths in photos of the falls.

Above Thorton Force you enter a lane to cross to the return leg of the waterfalls walk - I think it's calle Twistleton Lane. It's where the ice cream van normally parks. Go past the ice cream van (after a short stop) and then you see a path on your left going steeply upwards and backwards at a diagional. That path will take you up to the plateau and there is a limestone pavement area up there with the lone tree.
This is all from memory - I hope I've got it right.
Better still - have a look at this map (http://www.multimap.com/maps/?qs=twistleton&countryCode=GB#map=54.17515,-2.45484|15|4&dp=os&bd=useful_information&loc=GB:54.15385:-2.46837:14|ingleton waterfalls|Ingleton, Carnforth, Lancashire, England, LA6 3).

Well from no rain for weeks, the last 3 days and nights it's rained here (3-4 miles away) almost continuosly:) And regarding lone trees and limestone pavements, a colleague of mine suggests Chapel le Dale which is 2 miles out of Ingleton near the Ribblehead viaduct. Possibly the same spot. Chapel le Dale is only the other side of the plateau in my map. If you drag the map you will see it. Have walked across the plateau to Chapel le Dale but didn't see any more lone trees.
If you Google Twistleton lone tree, you will see many shots of it.

I went for a little recce today to a point part way through the falls walk to have a look at the water levels after the recent few days rain. I saw Beezley falls which I think is one of the last biggies...well a double.. it was fabulous. You can feel the water thundering through your body.
Incidentaly a new refreshment area has opened up just close by only today with outside seating. Maybe a spot to spend a longer session at?
I realised how unfit I am so it will be great to have the excuse of stopping to set up a shot during the walk:lol:

Hiya John,
I am still thinking about this meet. Please put me down as a possible +1 (I will have to bring my son, Reuben, with me).
The reason I will have to be a 'possible' is that this weekend is the last I will have time to spend with Reuben before he goes to South Africa for 2 weeks (so I won't see him for 3 weekends :'() and I have loads of things to get sorted for him before he leaves.
Also I'm trying to decide if he would managed the rough terrain, he is only 5 years old, so it may be a tough walk for him. If we do make it, he will have his camera too, so would be interesting to see what photos he takes :)
Here is wishing for some good weather for the day.
I will let you know closer to the time if we will be able to attend.
Thanks for organising the event.

Well, there should be plenty of water in the rivers from the rain we've had this week. We've had at least 3 nights of very heavy rainfall. I just hope it picks up a bit for Sunday as its extremely windy today with torrential rain which really wouldn't be helpful for taking photos.

Hi all
I've put together a plan for those people who feel that the whole walk may be difficult for them.
There is a point marked by a red circle on the map below where you could park cross a river and walk along the track and meet up with those doing the whole walk. The meeting point would be somewhere in the very pale blue circle along the pink line.
http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d158/staffitaxi/MapforJohnforWaterfalls.jpg
Please be aware that for all those doing the whole walk it means we will be doing it backwards. For me that isn't an issue as I always do it that way round.
I would still meet everyone down at the main entrance but then cut through down past the swimming pool to meet the end of the walk and eventually meet up with those who only want to do half of it.
There is the option for those only doing half the walk to go up straight away and maybe pop up onto Twisleton Scar. The path onto the Scar for those people is carry on the track until you go through the kissing gate where the wall on your left dissappears. The track up on to Twistleton is fairly obvious and goes up steeply on your left hand side.
Whoever takes the half walk option will however need a lift back up to pick up their car after the walk if anyone would be able to help with that?
Does this all make sense?
Andrea

Hi, I can't make it Sunday (which is annoying because I was after some free advice!), so I went up to the Falls today with my daughter.
I'd like to start by saying a BIG thanks you John for starting this invite...
The Falls have everything I expected: trees, foliage, animals, insects, fences, great skies, paths, bridges, a beach (well kind of!), coffee shop () and ...eerrmm, well some AMAZING, gushing waterfalls!
My flabber was well and truly gasted!
I started off thinking "This is great", and I took loads of shots.
Then, on the return section, WOW, it got progressively better and better!
Even my daughter was clicking away and loved every minute of it...
Just had a quick look at my shots in LR and there's a lot of overexposure, mainly in the water . I'll have to check out some of the photographs you all post and ask for advice.
One piece of advice, not that it's likely to be needed, as someone new to photography, I forgot to take a cleaning kit and, as a consequence, got a lot of water spray on my lenses...
Have a great trip: you gonna have a great day!
I had just logged on to say don't be put off if there are grey skies and showers on Sunday morning as the pattern over the last few days has been heavy showers with dry spells too. But having read Posiview's positive view(like it?) I am looking forward to the meet even more and look forward to meeting everyone and having a grand day out.
See you tomorrow:thumbs:
I'm off out to do a bit of practice
Okies, I will definitely be there tomorrow on my todd ( drodd on her todd:lol:)
My son is going to his grandma tonight for a sleep-over before he goes on holiday to South Africa.
So wooohooo I will be able to do the full course and concentrate on learning more about photography without watching out for a 5 year old going for a swim in the river :D
Here is wishing for great weather tomorrow.
See you all there.
Cheers
Dawn :)
The amount of rain we have had up here in the last 24 hrs will mean the falls are awesome, loads of water, should be spectacular. Shame I cant make it, other stuff booked.

Sorry chaps (and chapesses) I'm pulling out of the meet, the forecast isn't looking good and I'm feeling very achy so probably should spend the day resting rather than getting wet and going for a long strenuous walk.
I was due to pick up Steve from Bolton on my way past, so I am hoping that someone else can step in and offer to transport him plus his +1 to the meet.
Hope all that go have fun and take some great shots and I really hope the forecast is wrong.

Good luck and shooting to everyone that's going :)
Just to reinforce Andreas comments, be very, very careful on the rocks, in the wet they can be as slippery as ice.
Thornton Force is the easiest to photograph, some of the other falls present their own challenge as either you can't get close or the light is difficult.
Twistleton Scar is worth a diversion, not only the legendary solitary tree in the limestone pavement, but also some very interesting large boulders on the pavement.

What's the weather going to do tomorrow?
I think it should be good, forecast is for white cloud with light showers, hopefully as good as you could expect (for taking waterfalls), although you might struggle to get any sky on Twistleton Scar.
If you see heavy cloud coming over, I'd make a dash for Twistleton Scar :)

 Ade, thanks for the update on the river levels, here's hoping the falls are in full force :D

All the tributaries from Hellifield down to Gisburn are running high, I see no reason for Ingleton to be different.
As Les says, be very careful if the rocks are wet, they are like ice........

Cheers, I think I might just have to don my Docs (they are not the most good looking shoes, but they are the only things that don't slip on the ice, I always wear them in winter when it has snowed and is icy).

Twistleton Scar is worth a diversion, not only the legendary solitary tree in the limestone pavement, but also some very interesting large boulders on the pavement.
Hi Les Fab shots.
How far is it from Ingleton, could you put a point on google maps please I cant find it

Hi guys, just seen this. I was there today. The falls are awesome at present. Masses of brown water thundering through the gorges. Everywhere is wet and muddy, so take care with your footwear. Trees are dripping wet even when it's not raining, so your equipment will need looking after. It was quite dark under the trees so getting the right exposures is tricky, unless you want water that looks like a blanket.
There is a green refreshment hut after the first set of falls, but tea is 」1.15 a cup. There is an ice cream van just when you hit the linking track. But, best of all at Beezley Farm there is a brand spanking new refreshment hut. Only just open. Does a wonderful bacon butty, and lots of other goodies. Tea 80p, bacon barmy 」2.50.
For those going up the M6, J34 at Lancaster is closed to northbound traffic.

Many thanks for the heads up on J34 Mickledore.
I知 still in two minds as although I can cope with the rain, the white blanket sky is going to be useless.
Mmmmm, but the law of a bacon butty half way round does sound tempting. :D

Don't worry about the roads, you could always cut cross country (and at the time of morning it should be quiet).
I've put in an order for good weather and great skies, so no problem there ;)
If a bacon butty is the bait to get you there, I will buy you 2! :D
There, your mind has been made up for you

Sorry you won't be joining us Wayne, I hope your dad's results will be positive. catch you next time.
I'm about 3-4 miles away from Ingleton and the weather forecast for today was showery spells for the whole day. However the last drop fell at about 11.00 and the day got better and better. Right now there is 50/50 blue sky & white cloud. The nicest it's been for about a week. I know it's no guarantee for tomorrow but I'm a glass half full type of gal:)
I went for a walk down by our river here and it's the fullest its been for ages, i even had a chance to do a bit of practice on a little cascade...just swotting up!!
Well done Dawn...good bit of bribery there:lol:

Yes I too am sorry Wayne won't be able to join us, but understand and too hope that the results are positive. Wayne - our thoughts are with you and your family.
Thanks for scouting the area and giving us an update on the conditions there. The skies here tonight are also amazing. I would take a photo, but I have the camera battery on charge (note to myself BUY ANOTHER FLAMING BATTERY )
Now that you have had a practice and will be well up on technique, I may just have to pick your brain too :D
Look forward to meeting you tomoz.
Take care.
See you at 9am.
Cheers

All my little practice session did was to give me questions! I'm also going to be a brain picker tomorrow:D
I presume we're meeting in the cafe at the entrance?

Well the first one is a bit spooky, especially as Wheels (Julian) only this morning created the following emoticon :shake:Makes a note not to upset Dawn if she can take on the hand of GOD:nono:
Secondly, no need for a printout of IOU, I always keep to my word ;)

Questions are GOOD! :) and remember there is no such thing as a stupid question, they are all valid, especially when it comes to learning.
I'm not sure where we are meeting, but I am going to park up and try to find everyone else (I reckon camera equipment will be a sure sign of the gang)
D :)
I'm recovering from a torn Achilles so I'm going to head up the track that Andrea highlighted on her map. I'll drop Tom at the main entrance if he wishes or he's welcome to come with me.

Well, I'm afraid the weather is going to dissapoint.
Its blooming horrible.:shake:
Prepare to get very very wet. I'll pop down at 9.00 to see everyone and then make a decision on whether I want to go round them and get a soaking. My camera isn't all that waterproof and I got drenched walking round the other day.

Not too sure about my shots yet. I have a few that are ok.
Feel much better now I've got the fire going and am in dry clothes.
Hope everyone had a safe journey home.

Well it rained a bit yet again then , absolutely soaked to the skin. Cheers for sorting another successful walkabout John, but you are definitely jinxed with the weather :D. Altogether a very nice walk with some great company. Thanks everyone . I値l have a sort through the very few pics taken later and post them up.

Once again defeated by the rain I'm going to rename CGeezer to John the Rain man. Joking aside a good walk with some great company to boot.
Had a look at some of my shots one or two decent ones but won't get time to post them until Tuesday of next week.
Thanks to everyone for making it a wet but pleasurable day out and a big thanks to the Rain man for organising.
Mick
Wow what can I say, except that I had the most amazing day today with great company (thanks guys & gals), strenuous exercise with a good soaking ( that sounds :naughty:), stunningly beautiful landscape, the waterfalls put on an outstanding performance for us (definately worth an encore), and the good old British weather (well what can I say about that, except that it was true to form)
Andrea (staffitaxi), having read your earlier posts, I am so glad you decided to stay with us, you were an absolute gem, a fantastic tour guide and I just loved you sharing your reminiscences with us of all the times you have been there over the years. Thanks ;)
Paul (Pork), hey I am so glad you made it (despite the hangover ). It was great to see you again.
John (kaouthia), it was great to see you again too. Now I know who to dabz a fag from next meet :D
Tom (Boopop) thanks for not leaving me behind, and for letting me use your tripod when it was already set up. It was great meeting and chatting to you.
Jo (bidden) well .... what a cracking gal. I enjoyed our chat and had a good laff with you :) Hope to see you at the Chester Zoo meet.
Once again John (CGeezer), you pulled off a cracking meet (but you need to stop testing dem weather gods, maybe if you offer them some pork pies next time they may be a bit more lenient ). Great job pal, and it was fab having a chat to you. Hope your legs don't suffer too much tomoz.
To everyone there, thanks for attending and making it a very memorable day, you all.
I am on such a buzz after today, I feel absolutely invigorated (yet knackered) .... not sure if I will be able to walk tomoz  My hair feels absolutely amazing after all the rainwater (soz guys, it's a gal thing) - but then again I once read somewhere that rainwater is good for dandruff (so there won't be any fluffies on my head for a while after today's soaking ).
Now for a couple of glasses of wine and look at the pics I took today (just checked I took 130+ pics today, so hopefully I should have one or two decent shots out of that ) Will post when I have filtered through them.
Once again, a BIG thank you to you all - I had a blast!
Dawn :)

Wow Richard, that is gorgeous :)
Thanks Dawn but I'm afraid it's mainly photoshoppery. Lots of dodging midtones and highlights to brighten the flora around the water, burning shadows to darken the surround, cloning the tree canopy to fill the gap of white sky in the centre and cloning out the upper waterfall.
Andrea has started a thread to post your pics all

Well I'm shattered now but would like to thank everyone for coming along today. I had to lift my leg into the car as I think it wanted to stay in Ingleton  Apart from that it was good to see the gang again and it was great chatting on the way round the trail. I took over 200 photo's and they are mostly bad but I had a smashing time and will be returning at a later date for some better ones. I would like to thank Andrea especially for keeping an eye out for me on the more treacherous parts of the trail and for guiding us round even though she knew she was in for a soaking  I can't wait to see the photos,
That is a great photo Indiana
See you all at the next meet. I was thinking the Sahara to prove I can arrange a meet in the sun

And :nono::nono::nono: don't organise a Sahara meet, I think the world will be very unimpressed with you as it will RAIN and change the whole terrain bringing to life new life and vegetation. My advice, stick to the NW of England (you are safe there, and have an excuse)

Not really. After all, you dropped me off at home and once I'd got the fire sorted I was straight on the laptop. Most of you guys all had at least a 40 min drive.;)
I'm starting to think I should have put a bit more effort into processing my shots and the five minutes each perhaps wasn't quite enough looking through some of the others.
I'm sure I can bring a bit more life to them. Will have another go.
I really had a great time today. Thanks everyone.

Just echoing the previous comments, we had a great day, the weather could have been worse at points and better at others:lol: It's a long time since I've been soaked through to my undies:eek: But it was definatley worth it, the falls were spectacular exceeding allour expectations I think and the company was great. I've got one or two pics I'm happy with so will pop over and add a couple on the other thread.
Thanks John..great idea:thumbs:

Well I'm having trouble resizing them as they seem to be much bigger file sizes than usual. Maybe because I edited them in Raw Therepee? So I may have to try to link them from flickr.
Do you have the option to Save for Web or Save As then choose jpeg?
Well although I was working in raw they say they are jpegs but they finish up 5mb each, when I then resize them to 800 they are still about 2.5 -3 mb. Then if i resize for web they shoot down to about 150 and seem tiny. So i'm going to try linking from flickr now. See you in a couple of hours:bonk:
