Are you using HDR or selectively lightening/saturating parts of the photos? I ask because of the halo around the tree in number one.
I like the 1st one but you need to take it easy with the shadow/highlight tool as it produces dreadful halos.
One way to avoid this is to keep the radius to zero.

Dimitri, thanks - yeah, usually I'm paying more attention to what I'm doing and make sure there's no halo, hehe, but last night apparently I wasn't >.<

There is a crossing at Banavie at neptune's staircase.
