I think the harsh shadow detracts from this shot, at the angle taken..
Like the idea, and composition... just lacks "something" for me!!!

I like the use of the B&W with the dried rose, but I agree about the harsh shadow

I think the shadow is more of a problem on the black and white image than the colour one, but apart form that, they are lovely shots, just need a little minor adjustment in softening that shadow....further away from the light source perhaps?

I think to get a softer shadow I'd have to move the subject away from the background. The light was all natural, and these were taken with the flower resting on a sheet of white paper on a table-top so were shot top-down.

I prefer the colour one, it helps to separate the rose from the shadow. A reflector would have been good to just take the edge off the shadow slightly, but otherwise I really do like this.

I prefer the colour, but only because the shadows obviousness is worse on the B&W as everyone said.

You may find this soft light stuidio usefull for a tenner. A portable light studio (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?criteria=soft%20light%20studio&menu=0& WorldSearch=Y&doy=29m5&C=SO&U=strat15&ShowPics=und efined&MinPrice=0&MaxPrice=9999) from Maplins Electronic shops. :)
