View Full Version : Street Photography Meet - Edinburgh
Anybody interested in meeting up for some street photography during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival?
Looking at Saturday 14th or Sunday 15th August and taking in the street performances around the National Art Gallery, up the Mound and onto the High Street. Should get lots of photo opportunities of the fringe performers doing their 10 minute preview shows, and can make for a good day's worth of free entertainment!
Date : Sunday 15th August
Time : 11:00 AM with 10 mins grace for latecomers
Meeting Place : Outside Starbucks on the Royal Mile (opposite junction with Cockburn Street), map/route link http://tinyurl.com/2f9ftx4
Meet Format - Anything Goes!
1. This is a street photography meet, so anything goes. Shots of performers, buskars, sellers, canvassers, spectators, animals, etc.
2. The route we will follow will be extremely busy, if you get split up, stick to the route and head towards the art galleries on the outward leg, or Starbucks on the return leg and we are sure to bump in to you again.
3. There is no set finish time, so at the return of the first lap (back at Starbucks) those that want to can decide if they would like another lap. Note that a lot of the shows are very enjoyable, and a second round will be worthwhile.
4. We will need to advise EdinburghGary who intend to visit his studio.
5. Any latecomers, follow the route and you will definitely catch up.
6. All photos to be posted under the new thread created http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=251968
7. Most of all, this is to be a fun day so ENJOY!

I think SMOOTHEDIT is up here around that time....highly unlikely I can make it, he however might be interested. If you also fancy a cuppa in the studio - feel free :)
Gary.
I reckon about 11:00 hrs might be a good time to meet up, but open to suggestions. Meeting place we can confirm nearer the time. Thanks Gary for the offer of a cuppa, and may take you up on that. Hopefully Smoothedit can join us.
Argh! This would have been immense! We are up in september.
Eeek EG - hope we can still book you?!
I'm very interested, I'd make a weekend of it.

The more the merrier.:D
Hope you can also make it One Ten...hopefully the weather will be better than the Kirkton Lonsdale meet!
Sounds good, stick me down. Can do either day.
Don't know what makes it sound more enticing though, the performances or the coffee offer. :D
Maybe gary was only kidding about the coffee.:p:D:naughty:
I'm not sure of our schedule but am actually performing there, if anyone gets any pictures of a group named Latreuo from South Africa I'd be interested.
We may have moved further down the country by 14th/15th though.
Hmm, have my doubts about it now then...
j/k
I may manage a trip the week before just to scout out what is happening, so maybe catch Latreuo then.

Tent?
Yes, very small tent.

Sounds interesting, its about time I made an effort.
There is this place, although not in Edinburgh it is about 5 mins drive from my house. We could meet up night before or whatever, and we could travel in to Edinburgh next day by my transport or bus if having a pint. The site is about 20 mins drive from centre of Edinburgh, or 1/2 hour by bus.
There is of course by back garden! If you don't fancy any of this, do a google for camping sites near Edinburgh.
http://www.caravancampingsites.co.uk/midlothian/lothianbridge.htm
Thanks Jim, I did find one site - Mortonhall and thought £25 a night was a bit steep.
Mortonhall is probably 10 mins drive from my house and closer to centre of Edinburgh, also about 10 mins drive.
Hope you can make it Sarah, as said by Jockwas, the more the merrier. Looks like Gary is going to have to stock up.
Wonder if he has any cakes.:p:D:clap:

Thanks Jim, I did find one site - Mortonhall and thought £25 a night was a bit steep.
I've stayed at Mortonhall every time I've camped for the fringe and found it reasonably convenient for access to the city centre. It's actually quite a nice walk (takes about an hour or so) through woodland down into the centre. Plenty of photo opportunities before you even get into town. There's also pretty regular buses along the road outside the campsite into town, and more importantly night buses back after midnight, and although they aren't as regular as during the day (hourly I think) it's cheaper than a cab. If you've just missed the night bus what I've done a few times is walk about half way back, avoiding the drunks, and catch a cab as it's returning into town - takes no longer than waiting in a queue in town and costs a lot less than the full journey in a cab.
The facilities are good - they have brick-built shower blocks and I've never had to queue for long to use them.
Only you can decide whether £25 is steep or not - certainly not steep compared to B&B prices during festival month - but I can recommend Mortonhall overall, and I think it's significantly closer to the city centre than Lothianbridge.

Good site and not too far from Ediburgh. I have stayed there a couple of times. You kinda need a car to get into the city though which is a pain. There is public transport and train stations in the area but I didn't use them.
You do have to book this one in advance, no stag parties etc etc. Very quiet and peaceful and you can have a fire.
Excellent shots Glenn, hope I can come somewhere close to these. I am really looking forward to this. Hope EG is stocking up on the beer/coffee!
On the campsite OneTen, either Newtongrange or Mortonhall is within easy reach of public transport to Edinburgh, also I am off work that weekend so could meet up for some photos and a beer or two, three or more.
Great set of photos there Glenn, I'm looking forward to this.
Jim and Tony, many thanks for the camp site info and Jim if you're free that would be great.
I was in Edinburgh today and caught five minutes of this lass, and she was fantastic. Hope to see more of her in a couple of weeks.

(sorry if I'm being thick, I saw that Jockway liked Sunday but I never saw any other replies to nail it down).
Trying to see if I can make it and make travel plans, buses trains etc.

I missed this orginally, sorry. Thanks for the info, I've booked in at Mortonhall for Sat and Sun nights....but not paid the deposit yet.
Hiya,
This sounds like a great meet up.
As it stands it will be the start of my 2 weeks holiday to Scotland in my campervan with my 5 year old son. So this could be a fab pitstop en route and a great start to the holiday before heading out to the west coast islands.
I will give it some thought and see how it fits into my journey.
Will also have a look at some of the links of campsites already posted, failing which would anyone have a driveway we could camp on for the night
Hopefully will be able to make it to the meet.
Cheers

Don't have a driveway, but have something we in Scotland call "ootside ma hoose". Otherwise known as a road. You'd be welcome to park there. But failing that, the Lothianbridge campsite is a good one - worth looking into. Outside the city but close by and with good access routes in. Do try and come along - Edinburgh during the Festival is one of the best place places on earth. Seriously. You can cut the atmosphere with a knife.

thanks for that
is there a good parking lot close by to Starbucks...?
There is free parking in Edinburgh on Sunday's, but you need to come early, you may struggle after 10:30 AM. Suggest you park in Chambers Street, this is not shown on my map, it is just off the bottom edge and runs parallel to High St. I parked my company van there for 7 hours on our last Edinburgh meet, and it is a short walk (less than 5 mins) to meeting place.
I am sure some of our Edinburgh residents will advise of other places to park if Chambers St is full. Here is a couple of info links that may be useful.

Id be up for this I also have a fairly large Enclosed back garden for any folks camping or crash out in house if preferred, and be glad take you guys up to studio for a cuppa if EG is busy with birthing :P.Dont have drive way but parking outside on street and plenty bus service get you in to town in about 15-20 mins np.

I am aware he is a talented and versitile man baut shouldn't he leave the actual birthing to the obstetric staff? Or is this the next add on?
studio/salon/birthingcenter
Or have I read that wrong and HE is taking over with the actual giving birth?
He also promised beer and biscuits. Reading between the lines he also said he was going to buy everyone lunch and have presents tailored to everyones own personal taste.
On a more seriuos note - very kind of you to offer to step into the breach.

I'm going to have to change from a definite to tentative...
Got the camera a little wet this weekend and it drowned. Going to a insurance repair place tomorrow but if they do decide to repair it that can take 28 days. If I get a cheque I'd still need to source a replacement camera.
Hopefully I can borrow something from work for the weekend but will confirm nearer the time.

How wet did you get the camera? Was it wet with rain?
I had a similar thing happen a few weeks ago, camera got very wet with rain and then wouldn't work.
Some advice I got from TP friends was to take everything off/out of the camera, wrap it in kitchen roll and bury in a tub of rice. It worked, but I had to leave it for quite a few days.
The camera is now working again :)
May be worth a shot.
Cheers
Dawn :)
It's been drying out with everything removed and all covers open in a hot room (25oC) for a few days and still not working.
It is getting collected tomorrow (all packaged up) so I'll see what the repair place come back with...
Thanks for the info though Dawn! :)
Hi Martin, 25 Deg is not hot. Try using a hair dryer, but not too close.
I should be able to get something from work Jim, can't see it being a problem really.
Will update you Thurs/Fri next week when I get back to the office. I'm stoked for this event so I'll get something sorted!

Was cracking yesterday down at Holyrood park for the festival cavalcade.
I was at the street shows yesterday, cracking day. Followed our route and it was mobbed. Nevertheless, got some good shots and will post a couple later.
I only went for a couple of hours, got there at 11:15 AM, I enjoyed the day so much I didn't get home until 7.45 PM.
With the crowds, it is going to be difficult to keep evryone together, but we will give it our best shot.
Yep they reckon there were at least a 100,000 people at that on sunday.
We could get these toddler wrist straps & that would keep everyone together.:)

Hi Barrysprout, last weekend I used my Canon 70-200, F4L USM and also my Sigma 17-70, F2.4/4 and got great results from both lenses. I used the longer lens for most of the day, but the wide is really useful also. So I will probably use both lenses and leave my nifty in the bag.

I take it this is the same meeting I was invited to by someone on Flickr last night: time and place certainly match.
Provided I don't sleep in on Sunday morning, I think I may be up for coming through to Edinburgh for this. I was through for a couple of days this week, scouting it out, and took a number of photos, which I sorted through last night and uploaded to my Flickr. But I definitely want to come back through and get more, as I see where a number of them went wrong this first time and would like a chance to remedy them.
Looks as thought the weather might be half decent - not sunny but not p**ing it doon.
Hi Mile, this is not the Flickr meet, it has been organised only through the TP forum, and publicised through this thread only.
I too received an email advising that a Flickr meet was organised for the same day, and a lady by the name of Judy Cabbages would love to meet up with us after their meet has dispersed.
You are more than welcome to attend our meet, I will put you down as a maybe until confirmed.
Getting bigger by the minute :) Im going have a trawl about tomorrow get some praccy in.:)

When I did my nurse training I witnessed 11 births during my week in the labour ward. NOT a spectator sport. But if you have hot water and towels I'm sure we can manage untill the paramedics get there :D
Oh and top up the coffee jar too, Not a tea drinker. ;)
I'd prefer some ice cold Budwieser or Miller.

I can't make it now, I was really looking forward to this, maybe next year then. Have a great time.
I'm heading up there shortly so will keep a lookout. I may be easier to spot, short, overweight, black sleveless Domke jacket and camoflage bush hat. Unfortunately I will have my + 1, daughter & boyfriend with me.
PS sorry you can't make it OneTen, perhaps we will meet up again.

Have now made my arrangements for this evening. And hopefully I can stick to my plan of a reasonably early night.
So I am now 95% sure I will be there. If I do make it then Mrs Sprout will be there to. (Judy Cabbages ain't a patch on Mrs Sprout)
I will try to get the train just after 9 Tony and try to spot you. We will be the couple carrying Crumpler bags. Roses in our lapels. Times under left arm.
"The duck flies east and is served with hoisin"

Definately coming tomorrow, not withstanding flood, train failure, crisis with kids.....
I'll be getting the train in, so should be through for 10:20 plus the short walk to Starbucks.
See you all there, can't wait!!
Yep should be a good day out.:)
I was there this afternoon for a couple of hours, hot and jam packed.
Be prepared to take chain gang shuffle steps and when going down to the Art Gallery do not take the steps, go down by the main road. The bottleneck at the stalls is horrendous.

I was there all day today, got home at 8:35 PM, too tired to post any of todays pics, but if today is anything to go by then the meet will be really good fun. I don't know if EdinburghGary can PM his phone number and studio address, and I will call with confirmed number for studio visit.
See you all tomorrow....sweet dreams.

Guys a wee update....
Triple photo shoot starting at midday - it's likely to last 3 or 4 hours, followed by a viewing. I should be around if Claire is still not ready for labour - if the shoot is still on, we can hit the pub over the road. I have my 2nd Photog doing the shoot.
If anyone wants to reach me just call the studio on 0131 221 9863.
Gary.

Sprouts are go!
After a setback with buses and their Sunday service, I'm now on the 10:00 from Queen Street, calling at every station in the known universe. Think I'll be using that ten minutes' grace.

No, just one camera and sore knees
Great day - very sunny and terrific atmosphere. I lost everyone by the time we reached the top of the High Street. Where the Sam Hill did they all go...?? Caught up with Big Tony and Mile later on. Took huge number of photos - first thing I did was delete 230 of them. Left now with 70-odd to do something with.

I can relate to that trawling up and down high street and Mound my back was aching :)

These are pretty good Marty considering you had to borrow a camera for the day.
Yep the elastic man was a bit of a cringe to watch.:):thumbs:
Nice shots Marty!
#3 is slightly better looking than #1 but #1 takes it for me!
Cheers

Thanks James. Yeah, they turned out better than I thought they would to be honest. Boy did I miss that joystick for the AF though, although the lack of shoulder pain was a bonus!

It was indeed a great day. Shame we all got split up, better planning next time.
I did stick my head into Deacon Brodies on the way past a couple of times but didn't see anyone. Not to worry. Was great to meet you all
Got a few shots I am very happy with and hundreds I am not as happy with.
Would have been much easier if there wasn't all those people wandering into frame at the wrong moment. grrrr.
Have to be honest and a few of my failed shots were my own fault, it's all a learning curve.
