I really don't know if this works! I took it at the Silloth Carnival last year and as you can see by the clouds it was a real stormy day. Infact the Red Arrows looked like they might call off right up to the last minute.
So Do you think it works?

In my non-technical opinion; absolutely it works, it's not a "run of the mill" shot of the arrows eg blue sky, red planes.
That sky is great.
Pity there's not more detail to the planes but then you can't mistake the Red Arrows can you! :D

It most certainly does work! Great shot, with very nice colours. The nly thing I would change, is have the planes further to the right(about half of the empty space in). Other than that.. good shooting. Have you got any more from that shoot?
Works from here too. On this screen (Laptop) it looks like there is a slight pinky cast over the whole shot - it might be my monitor though. I'd shift them slightly up and right in the frame too I think. I reckon you might be able to go even slightly heavier with that sky too.
So - was there an almighty storm at the end of that day?!
I love it. It works well lots of energy and purpose
Thats a stunning shot! Having the sky like that instead of the usual blue sky changes the mood completly, making it much more patriotic.
Very cool

Personally i think the reds are sitting too low to the left in the frame. Nice concept but some cropping applying the rule of thirds might do it better.
Sorry.
King.
I agree with his highness ^ I think it looks better with a bit cropped off the top and would probably be even better with the arrows more to the right (ie cropped on the right side)
p.s. very nice capture all the same, I like the idea.
Oh shuttup....its lovely!! :woot:
Kinda good. Has atmosphere, but do have to agree with the cropping..
and also is it me or is it a bit chunky pixelwize?

Thanks for all the comments, really appreciated.
With the cropping, I have been trying to only crop in the ratio 3:2 as I had my fingers burnt with some gig shots I did recently, but I will try later a few different crops. Agree with King Boru that it doesn't fit the rule of thirds so maybe try some that do.
Messiah Khan - I'll process some more shots from this day and post in sharing in next few days. Really strange weather Blue sky to my right and storm to my left, and yes Robyn there was a great storm at the end of the day. Wonderful lightening over the sea. (but no good shots of it)
The pink Cast that Robyn picked up was there. The arrows had just flown across that patch of sky with their red cannisters on, so mixing the smoke with a very strange sunlite / storm sky gave a very natural pink.
Janice - Thanks ;)
Oldgit - Think the pixelation comes from the size of the arrows in the pic. Looks fine at full size but yet I see what you mean
Big thanks for the comments, keep them coming

Thanks - as for the sig - its needed. I get quite a few folks link to my site to grab pics or from Flikr when I use there.
Come across new links every day. Nice that folks like my pics, shame they can't even ask.
Only way I can see of applying some rules to this is to crop to a square? I don't like to many rules, so why bother. The planes need a space to fly in to, don't they?

Well Crop away folks.
I've tried different crops with the pic to put the planes higher - as suggested, but nope - none work for me I'm afraid. I keep coming back to the original shot. So anyone think there crop might work - please show.
Thanks
Allan
Works for me as it is mate
If it was my shot, apart from being bloody pleased, I'd consider a crop like this. :)

I know it cuts in quite close on the right edge but hey, I like breaking the rules when it pleases me. Plus it keeps the eye tight on the subjects.
