Hello folks

Anyone have any good locations for night time photography in Southampton, or surrounding areas (Portsmouth, Fareham, Botley, Hedge End etc etc) for light trails or lit attractions?!

Thanks all

Hi Kris, I'd be happy to meet up and do some night shots if you fancy it.

Cheers Dave!

Well I'm pretty new to photography so dont think I'd be of any inspiration or much of a shooting partner for that very reason but yeah sounds good. I might have a couple of friends who may be up for it too!! :)

Have you explored much night life around here before?! I am finding it tough for inspiration to be honest! I live in Sholing by the way!

Cheers

No haven't been out much at night I must admit, but there must be plenty of places. Weston Shore might be quite good as there's the flats, the bus shelters with mood lighting and the refinery across the water. Also there's the Itchen Bridge which can look quite nice looking over towards Southampton. In any case, it's better to go with somebody at night - security in numbers and all that!

Cool! I drag the mrs along! Hehe!

I work funny hours which makes it tough to get out to be honest!! I am near London tomorrow night so going to try to get a little more experience hopefully. I am free monday night for a meet up but not again till the week after!

Maybe we should plan in advance?

Agree with both of those suggestions. Take a coat too because it can get pretty windy up there.

How about sorting something out for this coming Wed evening then?

Did you meet up on Wednesday or still planning something?

davekiddle
06-08-2010, 20:02
Nope, no-one replied and I didn't fancy walking around at night on my own with all my gear  Fancy doing something next week?

ShrubMonkey
06-08-2010, 20:09
Up for next week, yep!

Another idea would be an alternative walk around Portsmouth, not the usual Spinnaker Tower, Gunwharf etc, thinking more of the back streets like Albert Road for example http://www.welcometoportsmouth.co.uk/albert%20road%20shopping.html

Anyway that's just an idea, but definitely up something one evening next week, Southampton, etc (weather permitting).

Sorry all! Totally went in one eye and out the other on the Wednesday suggestion, but as I mentioned above that, my working hours are a mess! Hence why Im up now - off to work!

Tonight (Saturday) I will be between Bitterne and Town trying to get some shots! If the weather is good enough and any of you would like to join me, then drop me a PM and Ill send you my number! :)

If not, Im not able to do anything for a couple of weeks as I only have one night off every 5/6 nights until the end of the month! There isn't any reason why you guys couldn't meet up as mentioned above!

Suggest we meet in the car park in Wharf Rd, Woolston for some shots of the Itchen bridge with the sunset behind, say 8pm. We could then go over to the centre of Southampton for some dark night shots :)

Map here. (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Wharf+Road,+Southampton&sll=50.897945,-1.381745&sspn=0.008973,0.022724&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Wharf+Rd,+Southampton+SO19,+United+Kingdom&ll=50.897809,-1.381853&spn=0.008973,0.022724&t=h&z=16)

Hi Guys, as I said I'm away this week but wanted to mention I happened to drive over the itchen bridge this week at around 7.30 and the skies were already getting interesting as it was a cloudy/broken cloud kind of night so you might want to meet a little earlier! Let me know how it goes and if you plan another one!

Jurys is fine Barry, only a few years old, friendly staff (especially Katriona behind the bar!) central location, I used to work opposite it so often had lunch in there!

davekiddle

I've stayed there before. It's quite central, clean and modern :)

Stayed at the Jury's Inn many times, it's a nice hotel. The only thing I would suggest is that, if you can't sleep if there is too much traffic noise, ask for a room on an upper floor - the hotel is effectively in the middle of a large roundabout - but the staff know which are the quiet rooms.

If you are going by car, ask for directions to the car park, it's directly underneath the hotel, but it's not easy to find.

Thanks for your comments on hotel. I haven't been in that area for many years as I used to stay near Totton. I am getting train down so no problems with cars, my scooter can get to most places Cheers

Once we've done the bridge, what sort of things does everyone want to shoot? We could go over the bridge into the town centre - there's a few old churches, The Bargate etc and probably a few people mooching around.

Take your lead on this Dave, going over the bridge sounds good, would we be walking over or do we need to drive?

davekiddle
10-08-2010, 19:53
Don't take my lead - I only live here - never shot there at night

We'll decide if we walk or drive tomorrow - it's a bit of a trek but the view fro the bridge will be good!

I'm sorry I missed you all but I didn;t realize how many carparks there are by bridge. Did get some good shots and then made my way over to Mayflower park and got some good sunset shots with dock cranes in background, hope you enjoyed your shot.
the views from bridge are great too

I was at Spitefire court for a while, Woolston is a very different place I remember going across the floating-bridge to go to work.
Will post some shots when I get back to London as I am struggling to get a signal here in hotel very weak, going on wonder today and proably take in Common always good area to shoot.

Hope you all had a good time.

If you want light trails then the M27 bridges at hedge end are pretty good, much better when it gets darker though so you can get the tail-end of rush hour there.

Thanks Adam! :)

I quite close to J7, but on my travels I think I saw that THIS (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=southampton&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=13.470351,43.286133&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Southampton,+United+Kingdom&ll=51.024982,-1.331888&spn=0.001761,0.005284&z=18&layer=c&cbll=51.024959,-1.331902&panoid=xAImM7Dt_Ad-MKnU4sPZ9w&cbp=12,151.29,,0,5) bridge here could be good for this. So hopefully I will be down there tonight as the weather looks good.

Hopefully get there between 8 and 9! :) Anyone welcome to looksy for themselves or come say hello!
