View Full Version : Now got 2 DSLR's!!!
Waw, my mother and father-in-law came round today and gave the wife and i an anniversary gift...................a Pentax K-x!!!!
They didn't know that i had bought a Canon 1000D on Friday so we now have 2 DSLR's!
Apparently they had heard me talking about the K-x and my wife had told them that we were looking to buy a DSLR and what i had been researching and they went into the camera shop in town and came out with a K-x for us!!
So, got 2 to play with now!
My wife loves the K-x and so do i. Nice little camera. Well constructed and nice images.
Thing is, do i keep both? :D
Tough one, if you have a use for 2 then yes otherwise its a tough one esp if the canon is better than the pentax lol
mostly depends if the in laws will understand
Decide which one you like, sell the other and use cash to invest in tripod \ another lens \ flash \ present for wife \ present for in-laws..in no particular order

why don't you try and get the wife into photography and let her use the canon and you use the pentax?
I would definitely keep them both for at least 6 months. Your learning curve with DSLRs is just beginning, hard to say which one you will prefer once you explore photography beyond the Getting Started pages of the manual.
But whatever you do, remember that you're not really buying a camera body, you're investing into a camera SYSTEM. Meaning lenses, flashes, accessories and also years of experience using them. After 2-4 years, most people will have either a) never moved beyond point-and-shoot full auto mode, or b) spent 5x as much on lenses and accessories as they did on the first camera body. Sorry but break the news to your wallet now ;)
Personally I'm so heavily invested into Canon lenses (and krhm.. 4 bodies) that I can't really switch to another brand very easily. Although I have been really tempted by a u4/3 lately.

2 systems and 2 sets of glass will be dear, but if one of you does not want extra glass and will be happy with the pentax and glass thats on it keep both.
But if you both want several lenses and do your togging together you will want just the one system.
There again,if you both go out separately to take picks and don't like to share glass............................
Made you think now.........:p:D
PS
good advice from vaizki that.
I know, don't know what to do. Wife is not really into photography like me but likes to take pics, simply.
Amazed by the K-x though.
Strange though, as i had to go into town today to buy an 18-55 IS for the canon as one i had bought 2nd hand online turned out to be non-IS!
So, been using both today (Lucky me)
Can't believe they bought us a DSLR! If only i had known on friday! lol
Bought the 1000D body and 3 year extra warranty from Jessops plus a camera bag, filter, screen protectors! Plus i spend £120 on a 18-55 IS today, plus £65 on the non IS which arrived this morning! Blimey, after months of research and dithering i now have 2 DSLR's.
I really can't see me keeping both though as the wife is just not as interested as i am.
Been looking at the Pentax k-x myself but cant really afford one. Volunteer gap years are expensive it turns out. So yeah, feel free to send me one. :)
Sounds like you lucked out inlaws-wise though, whichever way you do decide to go never have any regrets about it.
Wife wants me to sell the Canon so i have to obey!!

Man you are unreal, first have a huge thread about which one to buy, buy one take it back, ask everyone again and now have the very two you couldn't decide between..and you ask us... simply you are honour bound to keep the Pentax, so it is just that or both. As a gift you can't take it back unless you think the in-laws would understand and i doubt taht shop would let you take back another camera.
She should join TP since she has the veto
As much as I love Canon if you had to sell one it would be the Canon, to sell a gift someone had put effort into buying would be very upsetting as the amount of money it cost. Would be harsh every time you used it when you was out with them.

I know. As much as i hate the inlaws (25 yesr of grief off of them) i have to side by my wife. She is the one that has to see them more than i do.
Anyway, put all the canon stuff up for sale now, :'(

Don't Jessops do some type of 30 day return guarantee if you don't like it?

Looks like you can return non faulty goods with 14 days as long as they are undamaged and in original packaging.

I'm sure I have read on here of others that have used a camera for a week or two then taken it back to Jesspos for a refund because they didn't like it.

this can't be true !!!
K-x is far better anyway, punt the Canon and be done with it...
I don't think i can go back to Jessops and ask for a refund as i did try out the 1000D. It wouldn't be right and i would look a right fool if they stated clearly that as it was opened etc i have no right for a refund!
Maybe someone will have a bargain in the For Sale section instead!
Out of the 2 i did like the Canon quite a lot and was getting comfy with it and looking forward to making a lens spending list!! lol :D

Because, i don't think it would be feasable to ask for a full refund. A mate of mine did it at a different store (Argos) but not sure about Jessops.

This thread is surely worthy of your 2000th post.
Koolpc - I think you know it wouldn't be right for you to return the Canon to Jessops. It's not that you're unhappy with the camera but that you have a better option now. If you do return it they can't sell it as new again and it'll cost them money. Especially given the fact I believe you've already returned 1000D once (correct me if my memory is playing tricks). I'm sure you'll do the right thing

I agree, wouldn't be the right thing to do so will try to sell it privately.
The 1st 1000D was not bought from Jessops but from another camera shop nearby!
As for it being the better option, well, my balls are in a vice so i have no choice over the matter!! lol :gag:
:) hey Tony.
I am going to echo orthers in the thread. You are in a superb and lucky position to have two optional cameras. If it were me, I would keep both for at least a month and get as much togging done with both as possible. If you end up liking the 1000d more then give the penty to your OH and let her develop her own photography - even if it is just used for parties and family record.
If you yourself fall in love with the Penty then you are on to a winner. I agree with not taking it back to Jessops - but for the reason above that testing it for a month would be a good thing to do. When you come to sell it you could use the money for kitting out the Pentax and get a solid kit bag sorted.
Either way flog the non IS lens :)
Best of luck :)
Well, the longer i keep the 1000D the less it will be worth.
Well, the longer i keep the 1000D the less it will be worth.
Don't think a few weeks would make too much difference
But if you truly think the pentax is as good if not better then get flogging the 1000D and start kitting out the Penty :D

well, the pentax is a gift and it's rude to sell gifts imho ! :) . but in this case it's softened by the fact that the OP has just bought himself a camera. anyway - I would sell the penty if I had no intentions of becoming a pro in near future.

I would try returnign to jessops, least they can do is say no.
And you can cancell the warranty within a certain time limit.

Well, i don't feel that would be fair as i have tried the camera out.
On the bottom of your Jessops receipt it will tell you you can return goods within 28 days and get refund thats even if you dont like it. So have no qualms about taking it back. Many people do and if you explain you have been bought one as a gift there will be no problem.

You didn't care before about buying a camera trying it out, why develope a concience now?
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=17064849#post17064849
You have nothing to lose, you may as well see what jessops will do, especially regarding cancelling the warranty.
Either way you are going to have to take this as a loss but off set it against the camera you got for free anyway.
A second hand 1000D with an IS lens even boxed as new isn't going to be worth anything like you paid, they are £385 new delivered. So second hand £330ish. With that kind of loss, may as well talk nicely to jessops.
You're going to have to take the loss on the chin or see what Jessops can do for you.
Yikes .. didn't see the other massive thread (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=243732) and there are similar ones on other forums.

You were more than willing to argue when you tried selling the first 1000D to a private individual that despite taking approx 60 'test shots', you could describe it as BNIB. So what's the difference this time? Just take it back and ask, get a definitive answer either way. Once that's sorted I'm sure there will be plenty more Pentax based issues for you to seek attention with.
Honestly, you could give an asprin a headache.

I didn't take the other one back, the wife did! :D
Nice comments thanks. :cuckoo:
Well, my nephew came around this morning and said he may be interested in the 1000D. He is going to ask his dad if he can borrow a bit of money to buy it. Obviously, i will be giving him a good discount off what i am asking for it in the For Sale section. I said he could have it all for £350.
He is going to ring me later. At least i will know it is going to a good home. :'(:'(:'(
Now who's a lucky person then, wish I had parents / parents-in-law like that to give a headache
I know. Usually they are complete morons and have been since i have known them. I think they bought us one because we have a 3.5 year old daughter and we had been talking about saving up and buying a good DSLR for some time. Times have been tough and it was good of them.
I did say to the wife about giving the money from the 1000D sale to her mum and dad but she said they wouldn't dream of it so that will go towards something for the wife and the daughter!
1000D now sold to nephew. He was happy enough to take it with the Non IS lens so that leaves me with the 18-55mm IS lens to sell. Glad he didn't mind the non IS as i paid a fair bit for the IS lens!

I'd be gutted, I'd never ask my fella to get rid. Unlucky mate.
Its fine as at least i have a DSLR! I am well happy with it. The speed of the AF is superb and i like the inbuilt things like HDR and the Video mode.
The camera is nice and small and a little heavier than the 1000D but it fits in the hand perfectly and i have big hands.
I was concerned about the non lighting up of the AF points originally when i was researching different cameras but to be honest i can't fault the camera.
Can't wait to buy liitle bits and bobs for it now.
I have been recommended to buy some SANYO ENELOOP (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sanyo-MQN04-U-4-3UTG-Eneloop-Charger-Batteries/dp/B0024NJY12/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1280659733&sr=8-7)Rechargeable batteries for it so that is my next purchase plus a nice filter, and a new strap tomorrow!
Is the above charger and batteries good ones to get? Also, i will need a 52mm UV filter. Can someone recommend a good place buy one? Or, if not a UV, which filter / glass to protect the front lens glass?
Thanks

yeah it's not very eco friendly however the advantage is that if you and him were out shooting at this very moment and both of you ran out of battery then all tony does is nip to the nearest poundland and have enough batteries to carry on the shoot whereas you would either have to go home and recharge or purchase a more expensive second battery to get some extra shots.
the only downsides to AA is that if your at home and you need batteries then you cannot recharge unless your have rechargeable batteries not to mention it would be a pain to carry alot of AA's for shooting with.
Or i'd stick some AA's in my grip :D
