I'd pick the first one. Like that distant menace of the clouds.

1 + 4 for me! The simple green and blue/grey of no 4 is stunning!

I like number 2 but I think a little work to make the sky a bit more contrasty would help just to bring the clouds out a bit. There's quite an obvious dust spot just to the right of centre at the top of the shot you should clone out too...and get a rocket blower on your sensor.

1st one is very good but I feel there's just too much of the top right area blown. The colours are great though. Perhaps not a time for HDR but subtle PS blending off two exposures in that area.

The 3rd shot IMO is the poor shot of the set - it feels like the tree is in the way of a great view rather than adding anything to it. A wide angle would probably have worked well here to include more of the background and the whole of the tree.

4th is good too but it doesn't have the ooomph to me to say great shot. It's a nice shot but needs something more. Without seeing the scene it's difficult to say but not having the tree central may help, as well as dawn/dusk light may help.

A great set of shots. No. 1 is my fav, I don't mind the highlights to the top right. Great colour and lighting. Second fav is No. 4. :)

Hmmm thanks for the critique but I feel I need to justify some of my actions here.

Number 1 it's not always necessary to remove blown areas and in certain circumstances quite acceptable expecially when shoot into the sun. This was a very difficult scene to expose. The sun was very bright compared to the foreground and using to strong GND's would have removed removed all the detail from the mid ground scenery and made the foreground to bright in comparison. There is also a certain amount of blending already done here. Not a huge amount enough to not over do it. So on this one I allowed a certain amount blown highlights and blended to the balance I felt was right.

I always seem to be rocket blowing my sensor ;)

3 is a little experimental and you are welcome to you views of coarse.

4 I toyed with dfferent compostions and in the end decided on a central main subject placement as I felt it looked better again for me.I am not sure I would get the same colour contrast in warmer light hmmm

Thanks for your comments

1) Like it...sort of picture postcode for the area. Can't help leaning to one side when I view it though. Nice sky. Bit of foreground detail work quite well and leads in a bit too.

2) Nice. Shadows are good. Would be nice to have seen a bit more 'action' in the sky if you know what I mean.

3) Unsure where you were going on this. It may have worked if you were further back from the tree so as to get the whole trunk in.

4) I like the contrast between the blue and green. Nice cloud detail.

You obviously know the sites around here Simon. I always seem to end up going to the same places....must start to venture further afield.

That's about as big as that trees trunk went :) Check out number 6 here http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=24293

The more I look at 3 the more I go off it to be honest. I think it was the colour and simplicity that first attracted me to it.

I can't get enough of Snowdonia :) I am always looking the OS map for somewhere new with good photographic potential.

True, but I feel it is so bright compared to the rest of the image that my eyes are drawn there. The colours and graduations close by on the hills are good but I'm just pulled back to the white out area.

Ah well, if we all agreed it would take half the fun away.

No. 3 doesn't really do it for me but the rest are great. No. 2 is especially good - although the rock dominates a bit too much - and I like the arrangement as it gives depth and scale.

Agree Gary.
Number 1 is a nice shot, would quite like to see a 3 shot pano of the area, nice lead in with rocks and stream.
