View Full Version : Sea Fret @ Bridlington Harbour today

We went to Brid today to visit the grandparents (as we do every fortnight or so) and stopped off in the town to do a spot of shopping, I had my camera and 28-105 on me as per usual.

Took this shot as one of 3/4 because I thought the sea fret gave a moody sort of look to the harbour on what was everywhere else in the country a lovely sunny day.

Taken on the 30d at 28mm in manual at f/11, shutterspeed of 1/400 @ ISO 100.

Post processing, levels adjustment, curves, desaturated to B&W, boosted the contrast and performed a high level sharpen.

I realise my framing could be considered "sloppy" on this one, missing out the end of one of the boats, but quite frankly I don't care  Any more movement to the right of the frame and I got the iron ladder which goes down to the sand, there were people standing either side of me too which makes this shot stand out even more because of the desolate feel I think it gives.

C&C as always welcomed ;)

Been there myself I like the shot, it was very busy today due to the nice weather and the holidays so to get no one in the shot is good, almost looks like it was taken years ago with it been black and white as well.
As for the composition you know its not right would it stand a crop to get rid of the boats at the front and just focus on the pier.
Thats just my view.

I dunno, I'd have to crop to the top of the boats, clone out the mast on the far boat and then see how it looked, I'm not a great fan of the tight vertical crop on this focal length though.

I guess I could always clone out the boats, but it wouldn't be much of a harbour then  I don't like doing too much digital manipulation either.

Guess I could try and clone out the boat on the far right, leaving the two closest to me.

Well I like it Matt.

Yep it smacks in the face of composition rules, but hey they are there to be broken.

I see it as a sign of the demise of an industry, the fret just giving it that edge of a link to days gone by.

I like it - yes there may be better crops, but this works for me :)

Thanks for sharing

Allan

Just seen the crop - Nope - prefer the original :)

Well there you go, dont know unless you try. Maybe with a strong image in it, it might have worked, but maybe not this time.

Very true Sue, but I do like the original.

Thanks Allan and OG :)

Was just a bit surreal, it being so foggy and cold, fascinating stuff that sea fret.

With the framing of the original I would try cropping off the bottom to make it so the boats are right in the corner and just going off of the frame on both sides. I think the tighter crop like that would look a lot 'tidier' without having to lose them.

Michael.

You could be right there Michael, that might well work, cheers :)
